Another key wrinkle from the rejected proposal, sources said, called for the ability for each team to shed one contract outright before next season through a one-time amnesty provision that wipes that contract off a team's books -- even though the player must still be paid -- reminiscent of a similar provision in the summer of 2005.

Yes, the proposal was rejected, but that doesn't mean this part of it ultimately won't happen. If it does, not only will the Spurs be able to rid themselves of Jefferson without taking back bad contract(s), but they'll have a chance to bring in a decent replacement on a reasonable contract.

    Potential buy out candidates . . .

Williams, Diop, Davis, Haywood, Anderson, Harrington, Hamilton, B. Miller, Jones, Artest, Walton, M. Miller, Maggette, Salmons, Webster, Outlaw, Balkman, Arenas, Brand, Childress, Roy, Garcia, Jefferson, Kleiza, Bell, Lewis.

I left out Carroll, Maxiell and Turkoglu, because of Diop, Hamilton and Arenas. No way those teams pick the former over the latter.

Williams, Webster and Childress are realistic candidates, as well as upcoming unrestricted free agents Prince, Battier and S. Williams.

You have to be rich to take advantage of that (if it happens).

    The Spurs are poor.

Plus, love him or hate him, the Spurs need RJ to have any chance at success.

To me it seems the only deal that might have a chance trade wise is something that sends RJ for Outlaw. Both players might benefit and while Outlaw's contract is longer it is more reasonable per year. Something else would have to be added to make salaries match, but it's better than standing pat.

The Spurs have no chance at success with RJ. That's the point. We need RJ to be MJ, that's not happening. I will take MJ today over RJ. At least he would be aggressive.

Spurs could also use this rule on McDyess' contract. They will save $2.64M against the tax by doing so.

Regarding the new CBA, I think it won't go as far as a hard cap and players reducing their salaries by a significant margin. IMO, the $300M figure of annual losses is just a negotiation trick and isn't the reality.

Don't they need to use Dice's contract to get some one (hopefully an athletic 4) back? Or would they use MLE for that purpose?

Not sure if the Spurs would have the money to take advantage of this even if it actually happens, which I believe could happen only in the case that a hard cap is introduced, something that's not likely.

The latest I heard was that they will introduce a hard cap, but not immediately, It won't be fully implemented until 2014.

I don't see any reason for that. They could use his contract like Ferry's to take someone back and give someone else cap space in return.

It would be a good move to do but it will also cost money and I'm not sure Spurs will have the financial possibility to do it.

    Here's a good plan.

Spurs pay RJ a few million in cash and send him off to some island with his partner.

Stage a car wreck by setting a VW on fire.

Throw in a skeleton with a broken anus bone.

Great. Another gay RJ joke. Just what this forum needed.
