It's a vicious cycle IMO. A player is being liked by the fans, so the NBA takes notice and gives him a lot of leeway and fans end up hating him for this. Rinse and repeat
there definitely is some bogus calls from time to time, but at the same time, its not quite as bad as you make it out to be
they definitely need to allow more physical play, and quit awarding so many calls that just take as far advantage of the rule book as possible.
The key to getting these calls is to sell the call the way that it looks like you got pushed and fall down.

And the thing is, this wasn't even the worst call, imo, that Durant got. I can see how a ref would mistakenly blow the whistle on that. There were two other cases that I was really pissed, and they were the fouls that Chandler got called on him in the third quarter.
Both times, Durant got in the pait and Tyson was there to meet him. He jumped straight up, within his cilinder as they often say, and Durant come crashing on him. Yet both times they called the foul on Tyson even though he was completely in his own airspace.
