That's at least a maximum F4. The storm chasers said that the bark had been stripped from trees... that's a minimum of EF3 damage. But that photo speaks volumes... one of the foundations looks almost completely cleared off. I think it's got to be a borderline EF5. Sad, sad day for Joplin. Hope the weather is better today and the storms go around that city.

They likely had more warning time than 5 minutes. Even so, 5 minutes is enough time to seek shelter. The problem is that so many people now just ignore the warnings as always. They highlighted that on the discovery channel show last night. No one pays attention to the sirens.

Also, the video phenomenon is getting really really bad. Most of the videos they showed last night were just idiots on cell phones standing in the path while a monster storm comes at them.

exactly, how the do you only get 5 minutes of warning with a monster storm like this?
apparently this wasn't a long-track type a`la the 4/27 tornadoes. Most reports i've heard place it on the ground for around 4 miles. Seems it touched down right before it hit Joplin, which would explain the short warning time.

but... Usually the NWS will tornado warn storms when they see rotation or a defined hook, even without visual confirmation. Sometimes visual confirmation can be almost impossible if a tornado is rain wrapped.

Manny can probably explain this better than I can

and I would also guess they had more than 5 minutes warning. I haven't seen that report anywhere

You explained it fine. The NWS warns a cell the moment they feel its capable of producing a tornado. Not all cells go warned but I can promise you that no EF5 has ever dropped without being tornado warned.

The amount of deaths really are more of a byproduct of a very strong tornado in a high population density area. That will pretty much always lead to deaths.

I think I know where the 5 minute thing came from now.

People were under the impression they had 20 minutes before the storm was on them, when in fact it ended up bearing down in about 5 minutes.

Don't have a link, but I saw a few people say this during interviews which aired today.

Moral of the story? If the sirens go off, get your ass to the safest part of your dwelling immediately! Don't run outside with your cell phone, don't stand at the window trying to see it. Could be the difference between life and death

looks like they've revised the moderate risk area in the plains to cover most of Oklahoma and a part of southern Kansas. Have already seen a good looking wall cloud on a live stream

Let's hope today's violent, tornado producing storms avoid heavily populated areas

Joplin death toll rises to 116

exactly. whenever there's a well defined hook echo on radar they issue the Tornado Warning anyway. I just don't see how a storm can just drop an F4 that quickly without well defined circulation

Everything I'm reading is saying that rotation was first noticed in Kansas right before it crossed the border and that the sirens went off 20 minutes before the Tornado struck the town.

I can't find when exactly when NWS dropped the warning yet though.

    where do you live?

tbh I live in lubbock and all spring storms always seem to form about 40 miles to the east but they never start out this far. So frustrating

They also tend to make for extremely active hurricane seasons...

Maybe you guys in TX will get a nice soft tropical depression moving through your area.
