6 FIFA members accused of accepting bribes for 2018/2022 bids
LONDON (AP)—Soccer’s governing body was hit with new corruption allegations Tuesday when six FIFA executive committee members were accused of receiving or demanding bribes during bidding for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Issa Hayatou of Cameroon and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast were allegedly paid $1.5 million to vote for Qatar, according to evidence submitted to a British parliamentary inquiry by The Sunday Times newspaper.
The Gulf nation beat the United States in the final round of voting in December for the 2022 tournament. Qatar’s soccer federation released a statement later Tuesday, denying the “serious and baseless” allegations that will “remain unproven because they are false.”
The Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the House of Commons also heard from the former head of England’s 2018 bid, who described the conduct of executive committee members Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Ricardo Teixeira and Worawi Makudi in the 2018 contest as “improper and unethical.”
The parliamentary panel is looking into England’s failed bid for the World Cup as part of a wider inquiry into soccer governance.
In Zurich, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he will ask for evidence that supports the claims and forward any allegations to the FIFA ethics committee.
“I cannot say they are all angels or they are all devils,” he said of the executive members.
“We must have the evidence and then we will act immediately against all those (who) would be breach of the ethical code rules,” Blatter added.
Referring to his bid for re-election next month against Mohammed bin Hammam of Qatar, Blatter said: “I’m fighting to clear FIFA, I’m fighting to clean FIFA.”
The bidding contest was rocked even before the vote when The Sunday Times published in October details of an undercover investigation that led to two of FIFA’s 24 executive committee members being suspended.
Amos Adamu of Nigeria was found guilty by FIFA’s ethics court of soliciting bribes from undercover reporters, while Reynald Temarii of Tahiti was banned for breaching rules on confidentiality and loyalty.
The British newspaper sent further evidence—which it did not publish at the time for legal reasons—to the British committee on Monday to be made public using parliamentary privilege.
Two of the paper’s investigative journalists told the committee in a letter that a whistleblower who had worked for the Qatari bid told them in December that the country “had paid $1.5 million to two FIFA ExCo members—Hayatou and Jacques Anouma of the Ivory Coast—to secure their votes.”
Reporters Jonathan Calvert and Claire Newell added that “a similar deal had been struck with Amos Adamu, although he was prevented from voting because he was suspended following our original article.

Valcke expresses deep concern in letter following Triesman claims
Fifa has expressed its 'extreme concern' at the latest allegations of World Cup bidding corruption and asked the Football Association to provide a full report of the claims.
Former FA and England 2018 chairman Lord Triesman alleged in Parliament on Tuesday that four Fifa members had asked for money or favours in return for World Cup votes.
Two other Fifa members were separately alleged to have been paid to vote for Qatar's 2022 bid.
Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke has now contacted the FA to request evidence.
"In his letter to the FA, the FIFA secretary general expresses the extreme concern of FIFA and the FIFA President at the latest allegations questioning the integrity of some FIFA Executive Committee members in connection with the bidding procedure for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups," read a Fifa statement.
Thorough examination
"He adds that to be in a position to examine the situation thoroughly and with clear-sightedness, FIFA asks the FA to submit a complete report from Lord David Triesman, by means of which the latter would relate his declarations fully and provide any and all do entary evidence at his disposal."
The allegations of bribes paid for votes for Qatar were contained in a submission to the culture, media and sport committee by the Sunday Times.
The Fifa statement went on: "The FIFA secretary general has also sent a letter to The Sunday Times to ask the newspaper to provide FIFA with any piece of evidence with regard to the statements made to MP John Whittingdale.
"The Sunday Times had already provided world's football governing body with all of the evidence and do entation at its disposal. Nevertheless, FIFA asks the English newspaper to submit as soon as possible any other piece of evidence that it may be in possession of and which has not yet been sent to FIFA.
"In particular, reference is made in the letter to the allegations regarding a 'whistleblower who had worked with the Qatar bid', who allegedly made some declarations regarding the matter in question."

Fifa president Sepp Blatter under investigation
Fifa has opened ethics proceedings against its president, Sepp Blatter.
The action follows a charge by Mohamed Bin Hammam, his rival in next week's presidency election, that Blatter knew about alleged cash payments.
Bin Hammam and vice-president Jack Warner will also be at Sunday's hearing to answer charges of bribery.

LOL the two candidates for FIFA president under investigation for corruption. Basically, whoever wins the presidency will be exonerated and the other will be banned and FIFA will continue it's corrupt ways thinking they've managed to appear legit. All the top nations (economically, not football-wise) should withdraw from FIFA and start their own org. Tell Russia they can still host 2018 and offer one of the other Asian powers 2022 to win their support, US in 2026 to win CONCACAF (outside of the ty corrupt islands) support, Argentina/Uraguay gets 2030 to win S American support and kthxbai to FIFA

The US hosted a cup quite recently in WC/fifa standards, there are other much more deserving countries, simple as that. England has a much, much better argument to host its second WC than the US does, really the only argument for the US is money but as the Qatar bid shows a WC will make money regardless of where it is hosted.
As for FIFA corruption, of course it sucks and who wouldnt like reform, but it happens in every pro sports league. There is too much easy money for execs to make from the fans, as long as that's the case there will be corruption in sport.
If Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, Japan/Korea, and South Africa can host a cup (all smaller countries, some with low footie culture/pedigree), then so can Qatar. From a heat/environmental conditions standpoint, the eastern coast of the americas (Brazil, Mexico, US, Argentina/Uruguay WC's I'm looking at you) is just as taxing for a player as the middle east- maybe even moreso, because to maximize the TV dollar they have to play at midday on the eastern coast of the americas, but in the middle east they will likely play at night.
Football always has and always will be the world game, using cultural reasons to disqualify the arabs is weak. did they make bribes? Without having seen a shred of evidence and not following the news closely, I would bet my left nut they did. But do you fools think the same didnt happen in every other WC bid, in the olympics bids, or even when some corp is looking for a HQ or a new factory, or when the local govt near you needs to allocate govt funds. thats life, I'm not saying people should just look the other way, but it looks pathetic to get zealous and want to disqualify one process when you dont do the same the zillion other times it happens around you...
