1500 people reported missing in Joplin.... is this normal? That sounds absolutely outlandish to me.

Keep in mind basically all communication infrastructure in the town was destroyed. They are having to bring in portable cell phone towers to facilitate mobile phone access.

You also had people scatter to nearby communities to stay with friends, family, etc., people in shelters, hospitals, etc. If their home got totaled, they may not have a cell phone on them anymore, and obviously people can't call a home phone that isn't there anymore.

The 1500 number will go down as soon as some of those are reunited, but the death toll could still climb considerably.

Part of what is aiding to the confusion is that local LE and emergency services have not released names of identified deceased or those in hospitals. This is tied to privacy laws / notification of next of kin, etc., but in this case I think that policy is doing more harm than good.

A lot of the reunions and 'missing persons found' have come from people posting on facebook and the Joplin News website at this point. FEMA needs to figure out a better way to disseminate this information.

SMH. This is the kind of thing that kills more people just so some 80 year old with an agenda can get his way on council planning.

They've revised the missing down to 232 as of noon today.

I still hate the whole not reporting names thing in situations like this.

As much as we hate to admit it, lil mo/thispego is 100% correct here.

We never want to see somebody we know die, but when it comes to people we don't know, we don't show much remorse. It's only when the numbers of fatalities are large when we actually start to give a .

There's no denying that us meteorologists will subconsciously trade footage of an awesome up close F3 wedge tornado, in the country, even if it means that Hillbilly Joe the Farmer got killed. I mean seriously, when only 1 or 2 people die nobody really cares, we just want to make sure our footage is uploaded on youtube.

Wow, props for stereotyping and jumping to outlandish conclusions there.

Any fatality or injury count above zero sucks to see. Period.

Was chatting on facebook with a buddy of mine who is a meteorology Ph.D. student about chasing, and Joplin in particular.

He said a lot of the victims are so mangled that they are having to use DNA to identify, which is why they can't release names of the deceased, etc.

Tornadoes can really do some damage to people with all the flying debris.

    cccccrrrrrooooofffffllllll

    that's the politically correct answer.

if you happened to film an F5 tornado, that killed 1 person, in Middle of Nowhere, OK, would you trade in that experience, knowing Harry the Hobo ended up dying, or would you keep the footage knowing that this is one of the most incredible tornadoes in US history?
