    Non-issue.

It's only a matter of time till Dwight Howard is a Laker.

    These are things we know.

That's no where near enough. Look at what Denver got for Melo. It will take just as much. Because of the lack of young talent it will likely take Dallas eating both arenas & Hedos contracts.

His only other possible destination is New York. If you think he's going anywhere other than NY or LA, you're lying to yourself.

i wouldn't mind both of their contracts, why keep the books open to build for the future whenever you have dwight and dirk right now? you milk that for as many rings as you can, and worry about the future later with an opportunity like that imo.
I don't think you realize just how bad Hedo and Arenas's contracts are. Couple that with the uncertainity of a lockout/new CBA and it's a big problem.

we'd be too over the cap to sign anyone anyway, right? what does it matter..whether the cap is at 45 mil or whatever it is now, a lot of contracts are going to have to run out at the same time before we can sign anybody. might as well win a couple of rings then wait until their ty contracts are up.
It certanly matters to Cubes, bro. If it didn't then there'd have been no reason for Dirk to take a paycut. The NBA's in a volatile state right now, and mortgaging the future for just the "chance" to win a couple more rings is economically unsound.

I give Donnie Nelson as much grief as anyone, but take your Mavs hatred glasses off and give it a rest if you think the Mavs FO is anywhere near as re ed as New York's.

btw this is typical "big name free agent feigns interest in Dallas/Cuban's money in order to get the attention of the teams he really wants to go to"

What? What Mavs hatred? It wasn't re ed for NY to give up
What they did. It's just what it will take. Mavs front office signing Dampier and Haywood isn't a ringing endorsement either.

It will take more talent than the Mavs have.

Oh it ing was when it was guaranteed he was leaving for NY in the offseason anyways.

As we've seen time and again, the player ultimately dictates all the action. If Dwight Howard wants to be in Dallas, he'll be here, and Orlando will have to swallow that sandwich whole. Dallas won't have to sell the farm to get him either, unless they're stupid.

But Dwight doesn't want to go to Dallas anyways so this discussion is pointless.

Oh there's no way Tyson is a part of the team if Dwight is brought aboard.

But Dwight isn't interested in Dallas, so it's okay.

yes it was, they could have saved themselves the first round exit and just waited until the offseason to sign melo, keeping all those other players and using them as trade bait for dwight
The players they gave up are solid, but nothing Melo can't make up. It was a good trade for both teams IMO and for it to make sense for a team to actually trade a great player vs just getting cap space you have to make it worth their while.

No, the players don't have all the control. If Dwight wants to come to the Mavs he has to do it via trade. This isn't a Lebron scenario where he held all the power because unlike Dwight, Lebron could have signed as a FA where he wanted to go.

Obviously, the Mavs don't have nearly enough young talent for a player the caliber of Howard. I'd be surprised if he really wanted to go their. They're the oldest team in the league. Sure, Cuban is willing to spend big annually, but they're not the Lakers (and I'm not just talking about their inability to win championships). They're not assured of something magically saving them when they inevitably fall off.

If there isn't a one time amnesty in the new CBA that allows the Magic to eat Arenas' contract: Howard and Arenas for Chandler, Kidd, Terry, Beaubois, Brewer and two 1st round picks.

If there is a one time amnesty in the new CBA that allows the Magic to eat Arenas' contract: Howard and Turkoglu for Chandler, Terry, Beaubois, Brewer and two 1st round picks.

Neither deal would be appealing for the Magic. This would have to be an Anthony type situation, where Howard makes it clear he'll only play for the Mavs (or at least pretends he will) and forces the Magic's hand. Short of that, there's no chance the Mavs pull this off.

well nice in theory, but this draft is weak and the mavs don't have any real young talent.
