The best radio guy for the Spurs was Jay Howard and its not even close. Not even close. I understand that some people disliked Jay because he came off as arrogant to them on his radio show but he was absolutely the best play-by-play guy the Spurs ever had.

I agree Stembridge was the best announcer. Jay Howard was good as well. But why no mention of Dave Barnett as tv announcer?

For me, Terry Stembridge will always be the holy grail of Spurs announcers. Obviously, he was very knowledgeable and very good. I'm partial to him because I grew up listening to him, and learned so much about team history from him - even dating back to when the ABA franchise was known as the Dallas Chapparals. There is a lot of personal nostalgia there for me. It was a sad day for me personally, when he hung up his mike. It felt as though I had lost a connection to the Spurs valuable ABA past.

I have to admit that Jay Howard was absolutely fantastic. He really did a good job of telling the story and painting a picture for the listener. I became an instant fan. His trademark "bang" is legendary. I hear he was a self-absorbed jerk off-air, which probably explains why he was never able to get another gig. However, that still doesn't take away from his on-air brilliance. He will always be the voice of that 1999 Spurs championship year.

While I didn't care for him much at first, Bill Schoenig has really grown on me. He's as solid as they come, has a great delivery and of course is the consummate professional. A no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase style that I prefer. In a world where the bombastic style is common-place, I like Schoenig because there are no histrionics and because he's not over-the-top,

Shout out to former TV announcers Joel Meyers ('02), Greg Papa ('97-'00) & Dave Barnett ('88-'96) - all of whom I enjoyed immensely. Barnett gets my vote as the best of the Spurs TV announcers. The Stockton era ('04), I could have done without. Dude was well past his prime when he hit town and every night listening to him, was a rollercoaster ride in both inaccurate facts and botched player names. Thank God he only lasted one season.

Of course, Sean Elliott is the best on color analysis.
