Kareem or Wilt is a great discussion. Russell doesn't even belong in the argument, you folks all overrated him, see the link in my signature.
You have it right, Russell was nothing on the offensive end. He won so many rings because his teams were stacked miles ahead of the rest of the NBA.
Let me make it simple and clear. We know LeBron is great, and has been on two teams, just no rings. Still, everyone knows who he is and what he can do. It's easy to think of any other superstar that has duplicated that. With that said, had Russell played his career say with the Detroit Pistons, no one would have heard of him today. Ringless, nothing special. Because he wasn't. Russell was a product of relatively superior coaching and supporting talent, and if you saw him play, you would agree he was nothing special.
Back to Wilt and Kareem, Wilt couldn't stop the skyhook, no one could. However, Kareem couldn't stop Wilt's offense either. Wilt was a better rebounder and shot blocker. Kareem's career was longer, Wilt was forced out by a greedy owner when he still had years left.
Kareem > all of them
6 league MVPs, 6 rings, 19 time all-star, 15 all-NBA teams, 11 all-defensive teams, and all time leading scorer.
And if you consider his college career as well he is without a doubt the greatest basketball player who ever lived.
