LOL at the poster ing about his old ass iphone slowing down. It's akin to buying a mac g5 and ing because you cant run the latest version of mac osx on it. Don't be a cheap ass, sell your phone for $100 put it towards your upgrade or buy a 3gs outright so you have no contract.

Can you imagine dat with 24 cores, 32 TB of HDD, 4 GB of video capability and 256 GB of RAM? Can't wait. The Mac Pro is the only thing I religiously follow at Apple.
I find it somewhat amusing that if this situation were to have happened on a non-Apple device, the postings in this thread blaming the OP for having an old phone would instead be rofling and loling to their hearts content about how stupid they are for owning a non-iPhone, and adamantly talking about how nothing like that would ever happen on a device crafted by Mr. Jobs.

Android bugs, it's Google's fault
Apple bugs, it's the user's fault
You're not holding the updates the right way.![]()
A bit of overkill, but if they can make it then cool. Mac Pro's are beasts. Every recording studio I've been to and have read about has one as the core. It's THE standard and a proven piece of machinery in that environment.
If someone is ing about a phone that is a few years old, I would always say buy a new one first, no matter who made it.
and Steve Jobs loves you for it.
i'd rather have a bigger raise
A 3 year old phone can still do most of the things the average user needs it to do. There are going to be a few fringe items that it won't do but I promise you the average user doesn't care.
Further more, I can't speak for Apple, but Android devices that are between 2-3 years old currently and are receiving updated versions of the OS and running at higher efficiency levels than they have ever run.
It just makes no sense to consider the lifespan of a smart phone to be 2 years and new models coming out RIGHT NOW will likely display even longer productive periods. It really doesn't matter how fast the newer processors are if the newer processors will be overkill for what most people use their phones for (calls, texting, internet browsing, and simple video games).
Manny, you sound like "640K ought to be enough for anybody".
The thing with these smartphones (both Android and Apple) is that they allow you to do much more than just calling, texting and browsing... and so people do much more with them.
Three years ago the 3G was coming out. I happen to use one of those still today to test compatibility with older devices. Web browsing on that thing is insufferable. Would it work for most things? Sure. Does it feel like I'm using a Pentium II? Absolutely.
It's orders of magnitude better than the 5 year old WAP. And the leap from the 3G to the iPhone 4 or even an EVO is not as high, but certainly at least an order of magnitude. And I agree that as we move forward the difference will diminish and the longevity will extend. But there' still plenty of room for a few more Moore's Law iterations in the mobile market.
You're not the average user though. And thats the main problem that leads to the perception that a 3 year old smart phone is getting older. I'll grant you that a phone from 3 years ago today is going to fare worse than an Evo will fare 3 years after its inception but the point is that for the average user that phone will be fine.
Why are you trying to play dumb?
IE - the 2 year old Hero running 2.3.
the HTC Magic is over 3 years old and its officially running 2.2
Unrelated, but I'm actually pretty average as a user. I have about 8 apps installed in my phone, 3 of which are ours. I don't even text. As you probably noticed, I rarely tweet
The way I see it is that the average user is either ok with that they have for what they do, or they're ing and moaning (ie: OP) because of a number of reasons. If you're on the later group, then upgrading should be an option to consider.
Shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg to move up to a 3GS, and that's even supported by the upcoming iOS 5...
And BTW, there's actually a hardware reason why the 3G can't do things like mul asking with iOS while the 3GS can. There was a CPU switch between those models, and obviously, going forward, Apple is just going to stick with the new tech.
