My coworker just went to Cabo San Lucas and Mexico City and she managed to come back...don't know if they strapped a kilo of yayo to her, but since she's still working here, I imagine not.
I heard they are sewing groups of people ass-to-mouth over there in order to create human centipedes, then making the human centipedes fight to the death.

I'd defer to anyone here with more specific knowledge but the conventional wisdom is (and they touch on this a little in the article from the OP) is that the government knows how much they rely on the tourist $$$ and tries to keep those spots safe, plus most of the cartels view killing Americans as bad for business because it brings a lot of heat. In the case of my brother and his wife (who really did go to Playa del Carmen back in 2001) they got a little safety speech from the resort staff about the dangers of leaving the resort but that was more a matter of just local thugs and pick pockets than any organized gangs.
In the past few years I've had student workers from my office take trips down to places like Cabo, etc. for spring break or in the summer and they've all come back with no horror stories to tell.
drove down to acapulco like 4 yrs ago and the only bs i had to deal with were the cops in monterrey. i won't dare go back to mx for a while, and i especially won't be driving down there.
I still visit the border towns (Las Flores, for example), and while there's a strong military presence there (tanks and soldiers behind sandbags carrying automatic weapons), I'm still able to buy my taquitos in relative peace, w/ the exception of a few barefoot child chicle vendors every now and then.
those kids really deal drugs ese... bought an ounce from some 7 yr old for $6 back when i was like 21 out in nuevo laredo.

It sucks how perception can really affect people. I mean, I'm not sure what to believe or not, but I seriously question this trip. All the research I have done and friends that I have spoken with that live down in Mexico say it's ok in most spots, but still.

If you FLY to one of the big tourist destinations and stay on the beaten path, do the hotel pool, carlos and charlies, senor frogs, etc. you are probably as safe as you would be in SA.
On the other hand, crossing the Texas/Mexico border and driving anywhere is terminally stupid. You just never know whats going on with the Zetas and the CDG and where the next storm is gonna go down.
I asked people and they said flying into Cancun and making the drive to Carmen (there are numerous means of transportation) is not bad. I wouldn't be driving from the US all the way. It's a 45 minute car ride max.
