Probably not all of pro sports, but it's nice to see the Players Union showing some smarts appointing him. I don't think you're going to hear any Ewing-esque PR gaffs about money coming from the World's Thriftiest Ginger.
Is the proposal the worst deal in pro sports?
The NBA owners’ latest offer would guarantee players no less than $2 billion per year for the duration of a 10-year deal, at an average salary of $5 million per player. Union officials say that represents a pay cut of $7 billion over the life of the deal, compared with the system in place now.
This deal with a hard cap or flex-cap appears to be untenable to the players association.

If a multi-millionaire who drives a Grand Prix says you're being too cheap, you're probably being too cheap.
These NBA players have to accept some sort of pay cut like the rest of the US did. Tons of people went unemployed and many took pay cuts to keep their jobs. Why should they be any different?

Or Sprewell saying "he has a family to feed"? Yeah, Bonner was a smart pick.
So far all I've heard him say is that the league's first offer wasn't nearly good enough. That part is hard to argue with. If a fair offer gets shot down by the union, and he is in on it, then he won't be any different than the rest of them. No pass because he's a Spur.
Let me get this straight: As the clock ticks down and the 2012 NBA season hangs in the balance, we are relying on Bonner to pull this out in the clutch?

There is no confirmation to the rumor that Bonner's last counter offer included "double-coupon Tuesdays" for all players.

Bonner: Well, we were very close. But then the owners proposed to introduce a league wide sandwich tax in order to make up for lost money. A 5% sandwich tax in every NBA arena! Including Canada! After I crunched the numbers in my spreadsheet, I realized this was very detrimental to us the players. So no deal.
reporter: but, Mr. Bonner!! why would.....
Bonner: that's all folks good night.
(gets in his 02 pontiac grand prix and leaves)

He didn't spread the negotiating floor very well.
Owners proposal are just horrible. The hard cap at $45M require players to cut their salary by 33% and the "flex cap" basically removes salary raises for 10 years. Given how well basketball goes last year, these are crazy propositions. I don't see how the lockout could be short if owners stick on these positions.
well you start at the extremes. that's how negotiations work.
I support Matt Bonner in this endeavor.

Not if your name is Obama, then you start in the middle, negotiate with yourself for a couple months and lurch another half-way over to your opponents side, and in the end wind up with nothing but crumbs.
Laugh all you want, but Bonner must be a persuasive mother er with the way he has conned Pop into that contract and all the playing time. If he can be half that successful here the new CBA will set the cap to $80 million and contracts will be 10 years, fully guaranteed.

Yep. Tier 1 university, and a real degree - not basketweaving. He was the Academic All-American of the Year for two years running. Give credit where it's due.
And why wouldn't they pick him as VP of the union with those credentials? Which player in the league is smarter, or has an education more suited for it?
