Teams like Lakers, Knicks or the Bulls can charge 2x for the tickets, always be soldout also get more lucrative TV, cable and advertising deals. So, they can pay the players and don't lose money. However, even so, those teams don't have huge profits.

On the other hand, a small market team must put a good team to have the fans interested but they can't charge the same for the tickets, they also get less from TV and advertising deals. In the end it's a fine balance, practically no matter what they do, they lose money because the payroll only takes 70% of the budget.

The formula of low payrolls works for Sterling in LA, but that wouldn't work anywhere else. The teams must have excellent players, otherwise, who's going to pay to watch a team that gets outclassed?

Not many professions offer "garunteed contracts" ...the NFL does it best. NBA should adopt a hybrid make the contracts garunteed only for only 50% of the value (sort of like unemployment) ...

And no hard cap but make the luxury tax penalties more severe ...in other words greater revenue sharing. Train, is right ers should not get a "do over" for being bad business men. this is just like AIG, Lehman Brothers etc. no one should bail out underperforming teams. if they cant make it contract, or sell to a mega millionaire (>$500 mill) or billionaire ...family ownership that the team is their "lifeblood" financialy makes little sense how can they compete with cuban?

Players are being shortsighted. the key to "winning" this labor dispute is by giving up money now, so the dumbass owners can turn around and give it to them back in a max contract. Just make sure there is no hard cap and the lux tax is higher but not outrageous Cuban, Buss, Arison, Allen will play if they have a shot to win regardless ...
