Hope was pitiful in penalties, but props to Japan.

So glad they won it, good for them.

Japan deserved it though, they could have even won it if USA didn't mess up penalty kicks. Their goalie was in the zone

lol @ people don't watch the sport coming to give expert opinions on choking. The same people will be saying "USA doesn't care about soccer" in 20 minutes.

No expert, but it seemed like USA choked on their penalty kicks. I mean, missing one? Isn't that pretty rare in the sport?

Quit being obtuse. You clearly didn't think Japan had a chance going into the game. You were as smug about USA as anyone. Of course during the game as you watched Japan fight, you thought there might be a chance, but when USA goes up on you twice, you really think it's over.

The comment was clearly referenced about an overall mindset going into the game and even watching USA miss chances, most thought USA would win.

I know you want to keep propping them up for everything, but they choked and Japan played well enough for the win. They aren't mutually exclusive. It doesn't mean they suck, it just means they had a let down.

When you miss as many chances as the US, give up two leads and miss 3 straight penalties, that's not all Japan broesph.
I thought the US were the favorites but why on earth would I ever think Japan didn't have a chance?

US didn't choke. You're welcome to your opinion.

Exactly. Saying the US choked takes so much away from the fact that Japan just played amazingly when they had to and the fact that the US was pretty god dam clutch in this game.

I guess the fact that the US didn't play perfectly equates a choke to some people.
Japan played amazingly? If USA would have finished their many chances, it wouldn't have been a contest. Of course no one plays perfect, but in soccer there is mistakes you can afford to make and ones you can't. USA made many mistakes you can't afford to make and it costs them.

It's choking when you have something in the palm of your hands after dominating most of the game and then you let it go. It doesn't mean you played awful the entire game. That's the point of choking. You play great and when it matters most in a small amount of time, you let it go.

Scoring an equalizer in the final minutes of ET is pretty ing amazing as is having your keeper get 2 saves in a PK shootout.

I watch soccer religiously and played my entire life all the way through college (NCAA).

Soccer is growing in USA, especially with the younger generations both in fandom and people playing.

not to mention you have a long history of hugging the nuts of other countries
LOL whaaaaat? Um, pretty sure I was rooting for this team before most of you es decided to hop on the bandwagon. This isn't even the first USWNT thread I've started in this forum but you're telling me I was rooting for other countries?

You guys in this thread who have probably never watched a full 90 minutes of soccer until today coming in and talking mess like this is funny as all .

People don't understand that taking PKs in a shootout is different from in-game. You're comparing a one-time situation to 10 consecutive PKs. It's not like Japan made all theirs.

Acting like it was some amazing goal. It was a let down by the defense (again) and a goal off of a deflection. It was amazing, but USA helped it on by their own mistakes.

Also, penalties are all about pressure. The keeper did well for Japan, but the kicks were awful. So quit hiding behind the fact "Japan scored" or "saved penalties" when the reason they were in that spot was because of USA mistakes.

If USA finishes their chances in the first half, it's over.

Is it rare from a compilation of a country's best players? She missed the goal by like a whole foot. I mean, you can either call it a fluke or a choke. You can't say that's normal when so much is on the line.
