choke, plain and simple. awesome game. this will set back women's soccer 15 years. penalties are easy. aim for the high corners. the Japanese keeper was 4ft tall she couldn't have reached for them.
don't worry ladies. Brazil just embarrassed themselves worse than you did.

It was a great game. Japan, even though they were dominated a la USA vs France (in the 2nd half) showed many moments of brilliance with their style.

Acting like it was some amazing goal. It was a let down by the defense (again) and a goal off of a deflection. It was amazing, but USA helped it on by their own mistakes.

Also, penalties are all about pressure. The keeper did well for Japan, but the kicks were awful. So quit hiding behind the fact "Japan scored" or "saved penalties" when the reason they were in that spot was because of USA mistakes.

If USA finishes their chances in the first half, it's over.
Like I said - you guys are equating the US making mistakes to choking. On one hand you chastise the US for not making the most of their chances (having 2 go off posts and one off a crossbar is more bad luck than anything else) but then when talking about Japan's plays you refuse to give them credit either and instead focus on the fact that the US made mistakes.

Both teams made mistakes. Don't know many games where both teams - or even one for that matter - plays perfectly. The fact is Japan could easily have folded after both of those goals and they didn't. That in itself says a lot.

Also, if Ono isn't called OS incorrectly etc etc

Idk how anyone can possibly argue the US didn't hand that game to Japan. The US lost the game just as much if not more than Japan won it.

This was the best women's world cup I have seen overall. The quality of play from most every team was outstanding. So many great goals and games.

Is it rare from a compilation of a country's best players? She missed the goal by like a whole foot. I mean, you can either call it a fluke or a choke. You can't say that's normal when so much is on the line.
Why do you ask a question if you already have your mind set on what the answer is and refuse to accept the answer given?

Without a doubt. I didn't think any game could top the Brazil match but this one came so close. Every match I watched was really good and the level of play is great.

US is still the class of the world but everyone is catching up. Its good to see.

I agree. It does say a lot about Japan. Just because USA choked (IMO) doesn't mean Japan didn't play well or that USA sucks. Like I said, no one plays perfect, but there are mistakes you can make and ones you can't. When it boils down, you shouldn't lose a game where you are the superior team and go up twice. That's the bottom line. USA choked and Japan played well enough to take advantage. Either way it's semantics because the end result doesn't change.

lol DPG was sporting a soccer player in his avatar way before you ever did.
I was doing it years before DPG even posted here.

DPG, if you indeed played NCAA soccer I apologize for not believing you. I still don't' believe you, though.

I ask to see if you would turn your back to the definition of choking. If everything is on the line and you up, you choked. This isn't taking away from Japan, they deserved this as much as USA did, but is it so absurd to say that USA's performance in penalty kicking was choking? I mean, the game itself was great, both team missed some opportunities, but just that instance.

Why would I make that up ? It's not like people on here wouldn't call me out on it. It's pretty well known that I played soccer. I was one of the captains on the 2002 5A Texas high school state champs, I played at Incarnate Word and then UTD (where we went to nationals my Junior year).

I guess it depends on the definition of choking. No, I don't believe that them missing the PKs was choking.

Sucks for the U.S. ladies, but Japan played very well against three tough opponents to win this Cup. Good for them.

Missing a penalty kick is pretty unexpected from a professional athlete, female or not.

How could I make up a detailed story of my life line about soccer so quickly?
