It seems that both Green and Butler are under contract for the next year. Their contracts should be mostly, if not fully, non-guaranteed.

Training camp will be the deciding factor and it could be a surprise. For example, last year Spurs made some financial commitment to Temple and Gee but both were waived.

    Danny Green thinking about Greece?

ccording to San Antonio Spurs' Danny Green, he's thinking about playing in Greece. The news comes from his personal twitter account (H/T to Josh Guyer of FearCoachPop.com):

    Greece?!? Hmmm...

Yeup, it is an option...tough decision to make...offerring good $ too...$ that's hard to turn down lol

Green has a non-guaranteed option with the Spurs for roughly 884 thousand dollars in the 2011-12' season. For a player like Green, who is flirting with the NBA and D-League, a reasonable contract in Greece might not be a very entertaining option to pass up.

Green is currently in San Antonio working out with some other current Spurs: Da'Sean Butler, James Anderson, and Cory Joseph.

It's unknown so far which Greek ball club has made him an offer, but Project Spurs will stay on alert until further news develops.

will be the best for Green to go to Europe, if he gets a decent offer. probably also as a long term decision, he likely will have a more successful career here.
and his future with the Spurs doesn't look very promising anyhow, with Leonard on the roster (and Butler?) there won't be minutes at SF and also little chance to see minutes at SG behind Manu, Neal and Anderson.
    good luck to him.

I want the Spurs to keep him, he'd make a good back up SF.

If he does play over there the Spurs should try to pick him up again, that way we'd have 3 Euroleague MVP's on the team.

For the moment Green can't sign in Europe. I'm sure Spurs wouldn't be against making him a favor by waving him to allow him going overseas but they can't waive him while there is a lockout.

So far, Deron's contract hasn't been approved by the FIBA.

I see. I was just under the impression it was going to be done because there isn't much the NBA can do to stop it.

The NBA can't stop players to sign overseas but the FIBA can.

    http://probasket.pl/news/erazem-lorb...e-do-nba-39517
“Everybody is waiting to see what happens with Williams,” one agent said. “If FIBA says it’s not a legal contract, everybody’s going to have to go back to the drawing board. You never know with this kind of thing. There’s no need to start looking for a contract for NBA guys if you’re not sure they can have that out clause.”

The out clause is the issue that is being considered with the Williams deal. He has agreed to play for Besiktas, but has a provision in his contract allowing him to bolt the team as soon as the NBA’s lockout ends. FIBA could determine that such a clause is illegal, on the grounds that it detracts from the stability of the Turkish league.

And so all eyes are on FIBA and the Williams test case. In situations like this, FIBA will make a ruling within 10 days, and though the Williams signing has been known since early this month, the team did not make the official announcement until Tuesday of this week. That means a FIBA decision should come down by next Friday. If FIBA approves the deal, we’ll likely start seeing other NBA players look for international contracts with the same out clause.

Thanks. It's interesting to see how the NBAs relationship with Fiba will influence the decision.

Fiba has approved everything from what I have read, so now players are free to go regardless of contracts with NBA teams during the lockout.

You are correct. It will be interesting to see just how many choose to do so. If someone like Danny Green is getting signed then teams overseas have to be drooling over possibility of MLE-level rotation players coming to their clubs and making a major impact.

If Green receives a good proposal from Europeans teams, i don't think the Spurs will make a big case about it. They will let him go, just like they did with Malik

Between Green and Butler I give the edge to Green he has more experience and is healthy. Butler was a good player but is not an impact type of player but I wish the Spurs could hold onto both.

Well, MLE-like players certainly wouldn't be drooling over the salary offered to a player like Danny Green. For reference, Olympiacos has signed 2 American players this summer with Kalin Lucas and Matt Howard. You can guesstimate their salary at about $100K-$150K.

There are very few teams in Europe with enough money to spend a lot of it on NBA players who could leave them in the middle of the season. On top of that, if the NBA player has a big contract in NBA, his team in Europe will also have to pay a costly insurance for it.

Just got off phone w/ #spurs Danny Green, about to board JFK flight for Munich, then Slovenia. Confirms out clause in euro deal.

    JMcDonald_SAEN Jeff McDonald
Green sez out clause essential. "I didn't want to jeopardize what I had here. This is where I want to be. At the same time, I need to play."
