A US helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan has killed 31 US special forces and seven Afghan soldiers, President Hamid Karzai's office says.
The helicopter was taking the personnel back to their base after an operation.
Neither the US nor Nato have confirmed the cause, but witnesses, officials and the Taliban say it was shot down.
The incident is believed to be the biggest single loss of life for US forces in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001.
Just whose ass is getting kicked over there, apart from the Human-American taxpayer?
http://news.antiwar.com/2011/08/06/u...istan-38-dead/But the Associated Press is reporting that not only were there 31 US soldiers slain in the attack, but that 22 of them were Navy SEALs from SEAL Team Six, which shot into headlines earlier this year in the assassination of Osama bin Laden. This makes the downing of the helicopter not only the deadliest incident for US troops in the Afghan War, but the deadliest incident for the SEAL team in any war.
The Taliban were quick to claim responsibility for the downing, and reported shooting it down with an anti-aircraft rocket. This could be a significant change on the ground for the war, as by and large the insurgency has been using large-caliber machine guns for anti-aircraft weaponry, and not particularly successfully.
Damn, I lived in Wardak for 12 months. Just left there last November actually. It doesn't say where in Wardak it happened though. I'd be curious to find out.
RIP.
Not sure which aircraft I'd like to fly in the least though...Chinook or the Osprey...Chinook is just a big, slow, relatively easy target![]()
World fails Afghanistan despite spending billions: group
he global community has failed to create a politically stable and economically viable Afghanistan despite pouring billions of dollars into the South Asian nation during a decade-long war against the Taliban, says the International Crisis Group.
The Brussels-based think tank said the United States and its allies still lacked a coherent policy to strengthen Afghanistan ahead of a planned withdrawal of foreign combat troops from the unpopular war by the end of 2014.
"Despite billions of dollars in aid, state ins utions remain fragile and unable to provide good governance, deliver basic services to the majority of the population or guarantee human security," it said in a report released this week.
Violence is at its worst in Afghanistan since U.S.-backed Afghan forces toppled the Taliban government in late 2001, with high levels of foreign troop deaths, and record civilian casualties during the first six months of 2011.
Afghanistan relies on foreign aid for around 90 percent of its spending, but many international donors are reluctant to channel aid through the country's ministries because of a lack of capacity and rampant corruption.

==========
The only winners are the corrupt Afghan govt and the US MIC. The big losers are the Human-Americans being forced further into debt and poverty paying for these bogus wars without end.
CH-47 Chinook has the highest top speed of any rotary aircraft the military has.
Having the highest top speed can be great but to me the Chinook is another Cold War relic thats vulnerable to combating terrorist threats. That top speed can't be utilized as much when its transporting troops and equipment through mountainous terrain and its size makes it a big target for those with AA capabilities. Flying death trap![]()

taliban soldiers earns all shoots down a heli with 30 trained soldiers...total cost far outweighs the taliban earnin 10bucks a day...
war on terror, on the field the terrorist might have failed, but they did struck a huge blow to US economy to go broke ass....
afghanistan aka vietnam 2.0...karzai family in power is like the south vietnamese puppets who served under america who then got assassinated 1 by 1, seems like the same is happening per karzai family member....ppl might enjoy living under a democratic society, but they hate corrupted power munchers who do all to receive that position...
ps. this is what i dont get with the terrorists, if they hate the west infidels so much for stepping into their country or doing business in there country, why arent they killing the business countrymen who are doing business with the west? certainly there must be some hush hush money being paid from the rich arabs to the terrorsist not to kill/bomb rich arabs in their countries....
"if they hate the west infidels so much for stepping into their country"
They probably hate anybody invading their country, and then killing 10s of 1000s civilians. The religion of the invaders is not important.
"why arent they killing the business countrymen"
they are probably extorting protection money from the wealthy.
Taliban had been kicking tough rusky ass for decades. What made ppl think that the americans were gona fare any better?
Huh?
I've been in a Hook before. Awesome ride, but I don't believe your speed statement.
Because we are 'Mericans!
Not that hard to look it up, tbh. Rated at 170 knots top speed.
Osprey is much faster, but tiltrotor.
will we ever leave, or will this latest fiasco make Obama commit more troops for longer to the region?
