Matt Hamill has retired from MMA following Saturday's TKO loss to Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 133.

Hamill's defeat was his second on the bounce, following a three-round battering at the hands of Rampage Jackson. However, prior to those setbacks, his record displayed five straight wins - although one came as a result of disqualification against Jon Jones.

UFC president Dana White, a big fan of Hamill, confessed he would be discussing the Hammer's future on Monday. But Hamill has taken that call out of the UFC's hands.

"Today is a sad day for me. After six years and 13 fights in the UFC I'm ready to hang up my gloves and retire from this amazing sport," Hamill stated.

"The UFC has been extremely good to me and given me an opportunity to make a great living. That exposure has allowed me options outside the Octagon as well. I just don't have it in me to fight anymore and my last two performances have shown that."

Hamill, who emerged from the third season of The Ultimate Fighter, boasts a 9-4 record in the UFC. However, the 34-year-old revealed he has been struggling for years with injury.

"There hasn't been even one training camp where I've been able to train without training around an injury," he added. "I have not been kind to my body and it has nothing left after 28 years of non-stop compe ion. It's time to finally give it a rest.

"The UFC has become family to me and I hope to be involved with the number one mixed martial arts organization in the world as a coach, ambassador and fan for a long time to come."

I was always a huge fan of Matt's.. He was a fan favorite on TUF 3 and to me his career highlight is still the horrible decision loss to Bisping on a night the judges just went to sleep..

    Wish him all the luck..

Never cared much for that guy. He was a par fighter at best. Good luck to him in his next career.

I bet you were a huge fan of his, you flaming, bandwagoning . You'll probably be able to catch him in his next career as a male porno star.

When are you just going to come out and admit you like taking protein shots to the face by sweaty, half naked men?

    Come the on, son

    for real

He was a hard-working inspirational fighter.. He took a lot of damage in his last fight and it sounds like he has been thinking of calling it a career for a while..

wow, this was unexpected, he has received quite a bit of GnP damage in his career (Bones and Gustaffson come to mind).

He was an inspirational type fighter that will be missed.

He said he had been dealing with injuries and if you look at his last few fights his wrestling looked awful. On TUF 3 he was an explosive wrestler who was driving through all his TD's..

More quotes from Hammill he says he was seriously thinking about retirement after the Page fight but his coaches and family talked him out of it..

I rewatched his fight with Bisping today and still hate that decision.. It was in a lot of ways his biggest fight because of the dislike Bisping and he shared on TUF and it being in Bisping's back-yard.. A lot of peple felt Hamill would have won TUF if he did not get hurt and have to pull out of his sem-final fight.. I scored it 30-28 with the 3rd RD even.. Hamill dominated Bisping with wrestling, pace and power striking first 2 rds..

Page and Hendo were up next in the main event and i remember watching that at home and after the Hamill decision was read, being so disgusted that i turned the event off and just went to bed.. But Matt did a great job in the UFC with the talent he had and given his handicap.. Great job Matt..

Of course i dont know the guy, so this is just speculation, but i never saw him as anything inspirational.

He always seemed like one of those guys who used his handicap to get away with being a jerk to people.

Like, "Oh im deaf, so you should just deal with the fact that im kind of an asshole."

When did he come off like an Asshole? He acted out a little on TUF 3 but mainly was shy and quiet because everyone was making him feel like an outcast..

I'm sure that you realize that, given Hamill's level of skill in mma, these are not valid comparisons.
