I don't think I've ever played a game without using Redguard. They're just so damn balanced.
So far, here's the screen shots that have been released.
Bosmer (wood Elf)
Orsimer (Orc)
Khajiit
Female Argonian
Dunmer (dark elf)
Still waiting on Redguard, High elf and Bretons. The race of the character in the video's they've been showing is obviously a Nord.

I always played Dunmer or Argonian in Oblivion, myself. Argonian just makes my life a lot easier since I don't need to enchant/cast to water breathe.
While thats nice and all from the very start (water breathing), its quite easy to get water breathing equipment and redguard have natural resistance to a lot of stuff. Plus they happen to have (from previous games) the best starting skills for melee combat.
Not saying they are the best race but every perk that other races start with can easily be compensated for with items. Redguard are, by far, the most balanced raced for starting the game in previous Elder Scrolls games dating back to Daggerfall and maybe even Arena.

Finally beat Oblivion. 5 years after release and 180 hours of gameplay later.
Still didn't do 100% of the quests though... only that I achieved 100% gamerscore.
For water breathing/night eye/chameleon/whatever, I'd just make a light item of clothing or armor with a constant effect on it. They're are used sparingly to begin with so it was never much of a hindrance.
Redguards also have Adrenaline Rush which saved my ass I don't know how many times in ESIII. Oblivion was much easier than III tbh. III only got easy once I was level 80 or so and could with anybody I wanted.
All my Redguards come out looking hispanic.
On Oblivion I like Redguard for when I want to just slash up and Khajit when I want to play stealth.

tbh Oblivion became pretty damn easy once you picked up some form of Chameleon / Invisibility. Sneak around when you need to, or in cases where you must fight, use it to hide and regain your health and/or magic, then charge back into battle. Rinse. Repeat.
oblivion became easy once i learned that you could spam poison arrows on fools and the effects would stack. made the final fight with that one asshole last about 30 seconds.
... harrada was practically everywhere in oblivion gates and it was a 1 recipe potion for damage health.
Oblivion.....
Stealth, Acrobatics, Marksman, Athletics, light armor, lockpicking, Restoration = God character.
Get a decent bow and some good stealth skill (for the 4x stealth damage), you will drop some high level daedra like they are mud crabs. Include chameleon items and you wont ever be detected even after an attack.
Nevermind that you will level up like crazy.... Stealth on all the time with Acrobatics, athletics and lockpicking... insanely fast leveling.... You will have to work at light armor and restoration (let a few rats hit you while you heal) but you will hardly need it once you start sniping with 4x sneak attack with a good bow and some good arrows.
Swap out Marksman for a melee skill and if you can get your sneak up high enough you will one-shot almost anything in the game with 8x sneak damage.

Depends on what kind of person I want my character to be is how I pick my race.
Dark Elf if I wanna be an evil mage and terrorize . Nord if I want to be a noble kick ass powerhouse type. Redguard if I want to mix everything but not be the best at just one thing. Kaj if I wanna be a sneaky stick to the shadows stealthy thief.
Wood Elf is pointless to me. Orc was never my thing and neither was the Argon either. Imperials are good if you wanna be a smooth talker that through relationships you get what you want.
You must have done a lot of messing around then.
To me, Race choice in Oblivion is mainly an asthetic/Roleplay thing.... By far the best starting race is Redguard as far as combat is concerned if your into maxing your character for melee. After level 10 or 15 though, it really doesnt matter too much. Im hoping that this will change in Skyrim.
I did that a grand total of once. I had a Dark Elf running around in a full, 5-piece set of armor where each piece had 20% Chameleon. Game = broken.
I did that once. Made the game not very fun. You could even run into them and they still wouldn't attack you.
That's why I only did it once. It was only for part of the playthrough, then I swapped out the Chameleon armor for a full set of Feather armor for dungeon diving.
