When the iPod first came out there were already other MP3 players, but along with iTunes and the music store, he sold the whole package and changed the way music was sold.
The first iPhone didn't even do half the stuff the Blackberries did, functionally speaking, but when they launched the app store and 3rd party development (for $100 for the dev kit, unheard of at the time), they changed the mobile landscape.
When the iPad came out, there were already other tablet PCs out there running windows, and a lot of people thought it was going to tank (you can probably find 1000 articles on "why tablets won't catch on" before the launch). Not only it caught on, every other company jumped on the wagon, and tablets have been eating at netbook and PC sales like nuts.
He's a ruthless asshole when it comes to the business side, but the way he affected technology is really non-arguable.
Steve Jobs made himself synonymous to the brand he represents and the products he sells. It's like when you think about AAPL, he always pops out in the memory of the consumer. When you buy an Apple product, you see his face or a memory information of him through that Apple product box. Same thing with the MSFT brand & products being synonymous with Bill Gates.
The next Chief Executive should be able to do this. If not, he's going to be a big failure -- a next Ballmer.
Jobs moreso than any other person is why desktop PCs are on the verge of obsolete. Businesses are the only reason why they're still needed.
Cook has filled in before, and will be taking over. I doubt Jobs would have stepped down if he wasn't fully confident in him.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if tablets overtook laptops completely. Laptops will never be easily upgradable in a cost efficient manner, or cheap, and with the increasing ease of touch and voice technology, laptops could appear clunky and overpriced in comparison to tablets to the average consumer. However, large niche markets would probably still exist, like students, for example.
OTOH, I don't see desktop PCs going anywhere. More people learn the ease and low cost of upgrading their desktop PCs every day. It will never have mobility but it will always be cheaper.
I don't know if tabs will ever overtake laptops. At least not in the next 5 or so years. Laptops have so many advantages compared to tabs. At least that's how I see them. For now, that is.
I don't disagree. But tablets have definitely eaten up a good chunk of the netbook market (if not entirely) and some niches of the laptop/desktop market (like non-tech savvy mom/grandma having a cheap pc/laptop to surf, email, photos).
I agree, but in 5 years time there should be a flood of older generation tablets for cheap (sort of like the HP one for $99 we are seeing/saw, but obviously one hopes they won't be unsupported).
Basically in a few years if you can buy an ipad2 or (whatever) for $129 but low end laptops are still $250+ I know which one I will be choosing, and I'm sure many will feel the same. Will it have the capabilities of a laptop? No, but I'm assuming here that the average joe will find it more than enough for his daily usage.
agree. 2 years ago people were predicting that it would be the netbook black friday, one at 99 bucks. that never happened and now netbooks are all but dead.

Tablets probably will never completely take over the industry, because there will always be power-users who require things only laptops can do. Until they can design tablets to provide these functions, laptops will still be out there.
That said, those power-users are probably a pretty small percentage of overall users, comparatively. Most people probably just use a laptop for browsing, email, word processing, and other basic functions. Most of this can be handled fine by tablets, and so that chunk of the market share will always be out there just waiting to switch, and that's why the whole tablet idea has just exploded.
IMO most ppl will need both. Tablet is a light version to do light things. And notebook is a power version.
IMO that Asus transformer is a great idea, same thing with the MOtorola atrix phones. they have a real keyboard dock you can plug the devices in and it becomes a real laptop.
Now if they had that for Windows, I would be all over that. Hopefully they continue this merge towards a "convertible" tablet/laptop.

Tablets have killed the netbook. I am carrying around my touchpad and my laptop though. I don't need my laptop everyday but I hate to not have it when I do need it. Even when I have it, I will be carrying the tablet because its MUCH more convenient.
I was anti apple, until i used my friends ipad, i bought one a week later. As for the rips on apple fan boys....how can you not when something like this exist?
that hp netbook makes a good paper weight. its garbage next to my ipad two which is why i sold all 6 of the touchpads i got.
for the money though i guess its okay but if you have owned or used an ipad its painful to use that thing.
