Quit being cute and just answer the question. Here they were, your Los Angeles Lakers, game 7 at home, the balloons in the rafters ready to rain down on the Forum floor as West and Baylor celebrated their first championship. Bill Russell was past prime and planning to retire, and the Celtics, already having won 10 les at this point, were not as hungry as the ringless Lakers. No way they could lose. Nuh uh, not on your sweet bippy.

Then, Don Nelson hoists that shot up, it bounces high off the back iron and in, forcing the biggest sandwich you ever ate down yer throat.

And the funny thing is, he made ya like it!

Ever eat cabbage through a barbed wire fence?

If you sneeze, will you bite yourself in the chest?

Actually, if you watch that entire fourth quarter, it wasn't really that shot that cost the Lakers the game. Boston had about a 15-20 point lead for much of the first part of it. Poor play by the Lakers in the third quarter allowed that to happen. In the fourth, Jerry West bricked several free throws, as did Wilt Chamberlain. Those later proved to be difference makers. Chamberlain went out with a knee injury late. (This may have been a precursor to the injury he received early the next season that knocked him out most of the year). Then the Lakers started a comeback. I think they had 2 chances to take a lead, but Boston finally started to play defense. Nelson's shot came when Boston had a 1 point lead and about a minute left. There were no 3 point shots back then, so it was harder to come back. If Nelson's shot doesn't go in, the Lakers have a third chance to take the lead. However, as happened, they didn't score following Nelson's shot, so you could argue Boston still has a 1 point lead and the ball with maybe 30-40 seconds left. Lakers scored at the buzzer to cut a 4 point lead to 2.

What lost the game in the end is Wilt begged to get back in the game and the coach refused. Coach's statement was the unit on the floor got them back in it, and he was sticking with that. See, Chamberlain and coach Van Breda Koff hated each other, and they let egos get in the way. Me, if I am coach and the greatest player of all time at that point in history is on my bench and wants back in, he doesn't have to ask, I put him in ASAP. Probably as soon as he comes to the bench the first time, I tell him, let me know when you can get back in. I'll live or die with him on the floor.

Now, the Lakers still probably would have lost with Wilt back in there, but I honestly can't think of any other NBA finals game 7 where the best player was benched while the game was decided. Total stupidity. If that happened today, it would have been a media circus unlike no other before it. (Even more so than Kobe "quitting" in game 7, 2006 vs. Suns). That to me, is the reason the Lakers lost, not Don Nelson's shot.

LMAO at your avatar. I still want to bang his famous daughter.

Yep, and you can find the game on you tube if you look for it. I last saw it about a year ago and I believe my description is accurate. The commentators don't even mention Wilt wanting back in IIRC, that would never happen today. They did make a big deal of him being injured and wanting out, but you know the cameras would be focused on the Lakers bench and Doris Burke would be rushing to interview the Big Dipper and asking the coach when does he put him back in. That series is 42 years old now, the close of the first third of NBA history. Just about everything about the game and the media coverage has changed since then.

    Daddys recollection is spot on.

I was there and it SUCKED. Driving home was depressing. Frustrating times for Laker fans. So many trips to the finals and never getting over that next to last hump for the franchise to be considered true champions and one of the few storied jewels. It took almost 20 more years after to do so too.

You guys should know... its like your drives home in the seasons between your championships. Maybe one day you will defend and become one of the few as well.
