Well, his prior nickname was "The Rapist" so I can see why he desperately wanted a cooler nickname
I can't even think of any great players who actually gave themselves a nickname. It's always bestowed upon them by others. Magic, Air Jordan, The Big Ticket, The Big Fundamental, Ghostface Drillah, Dr J, Sir Charles, etc. All given to them, rather than those people picking a nickname and demanding other people call them that.
There's only three stars who gave themselves a nickname as far as I know:
-Larry Bird called himself The Hick From French Lick, and he did it as a joke, not seriously.
-Shaq went through a nickname phase where he called himself The Big Aristotle, The Big Shaqctus, etc, but again, he did it as a joke, and didn't take those nicknames seriously.
-Kobe demanded that everyone call him Black Mamba.....not as a joke, not to be funny.
Is there anything more pathetic than giving yourself a serious nickname?
