The Geniuses We'll Never Know

Talent doesn’t cut it. Greatness requires freedom to be a weirdo.
This essay is not about Steve Jobs. It is about the countless individuals with roughly the same combination of talents of whom we’ve never heard and never will.
Most of the 106 billion people who’ve ever lived are dead—around 94 percent of them. And most of those dead people were Asian—probably more than 60 percent. And most of those dead Asians were dirt poor. Born into illiterate peasant families enslaved by subsistence agriculture under some or other form of hierarchical government, the Steves of the past never stood a chance.
Chances are, those other Steves didn’t make it into their 30s, never mind their mid-50s. An appalling number died in childhood, killed off by afflictions far easier to treat than pancreatic cancer. The ones who made it to adulthood didn’t have the option to drop out of college because they never went to college. Even the tiny number of Steves who had the good fortune to rise to the top of premodern societies wasted their entire lives doing calligraphy (which he briefly dabbled in at Reed College). Those who sought to innovate were more likely to be punished than rewarded.
Today, according to estimates by Credit Suisse, there is approximately $195 trillion of wealth in the world. Most of it was made quite recently, in the wake of those great political and economic revolutions of the late 18th century, which, for the first time in human history, put a real premium on innovation. And most of it is owned by Westerners—Europeans and inhabitants of the New World and Antipodes inhabited by their descendants. We may account for less than a fifth of humanity, but we Westerners still own two thirds of global wealth.
A nontrivial portion of that wealth ($6.7 billion) belonged to Steve Jobs and now belongs to his heirs. In that respect, Jobs personified the rising inequality that is one of the striking characteristics of his lifetime. Back in 1955 the top 1 percent of Americans earned 9 percent of income. Today the figure is above 14 percent.
Yet there is no crowd of young people rampaging through Palo Alto threatening to “Occupy Silicon Valley.” The huge amounts of money made by Jobs and his fellow pioneers of personal computing are not resented the way the vampire squids of Wall Street are. On the contrary, Jobs is revered. One eminent hedge-fund manager (who probably holds a healthy slice of Apple stock as well as the full array of iGadgets) recently likened him to Leonardo da Vinci.
So the question is not, how do we produce more Steves? The normal process of human reproduction will ensure a steady supply of what Malcolm Gladwell has called “outliers.” The question should be, how do we ensure that the next Steve Jobs fulfills his potential?
An adopted child, the biological son of a Syrian Muslim immigrant, a college dropout, a hippie who briefly converted to Buddhism and experimented with LSD—Jobs was the type of guy no sane human resources department would have hired. I doubt that Apple itself would hire someone with his résumé at age 20. The only chance he ever had to become a chief executive officer was by founding his own company.
And that—China, please note—is why capitalism needs to be embedded in a truly free society in order to flourish. In a free society a weirdo can do his own thing. In a free society he can even fail at his own thing, as Jobs undoubtedly did in his first stint in charge of Apple. And in a free society he can bounce back and revolutionize all our lives.
Somewhere in his father’s native Syria another Steve Jobs has just died. But this other Steve was gunned down by a tyrannical government. And what wonders his genius might have produced we shall never know.

I don't think it's just socialism. Regulation is hideous. Obamacare, for instance, although not particularly Socialist, is creating mountains of paper in my office. 2000 pages establishing government en ies with authority to demand you do this, do that, tell this person this, notify that person of that, calculate, justify......you get the picture. It is a serious pig.
I was just talking to my brother this morning (also my business parter) about how, with all the regulations, any person in their right mind would start a business now. The number of obscure regulations and demands that you have to keep up with (just finding them all is a real task - there isn't a place to go for a list), violating any one of which, willfully or not, could spell the end of your business, is an abysmal task.
And, trust me, it is NOT just the Democrats. Medicare part D, as well as additional HIPAA regs on privacy and e-commerce, as well as another law regarding Medicare most people are blissfully unaware of, have all done there share to overwhelm us - and were brought to us when Republicans controlled EVERYTHING. Puts small businesses, who can't afford a department for this crap, at a serious disadvantage.

Actually, I misspoke. There are businesses that provide such lists; the government does not. The problem is the regs are getting to the point that businesses that provide compliance services, especially of the "turn key" variety, are getting to be a luxury many employers cannot afford, especially in this economy. And again, those businesses don't indemnify theirs clients. If a screw up is made, it's still on the employer.

We're currently working on X12 5010 Medicare support mandate by HIPAA, and besides the fact that you've to pony up a couple thousands to purchase the standard do entation from X12 (a first, 4010 was free), the amount of trial and error that we had to do was asinine. At least now you can submit claims through the internet!

I forget, I'm on the Payor side - the payee side has its own pile! (I actually panicked when I saw your post; got caught off guard a couple of years ago with CMS reporting requirements)
Both sides have to raise costs to compensate - exponential cost increases; and people wonder why healthcare is so expensive.
I don't wonder; it's government regulation.
Should we discuss the fact that conservatives in the US are laughably ignorant about the rest of the world or that you sprecifically are too dumb to figure out that such pronouncements are invariably so US-centric as to be meaningless?
What pisses me off is that DISA is supposed to be a non-profit, but they charge you an arm and a leg for the docs. Otherwise, this update was needed, and I think it will save time and money on both sides in the long run, at least on the electronics side (I'm talking HIPAA here, not Barrycare).
It's ridiculous we're in 2011 and you still had to send electronic claims through a modem.
Switzerland and Germany have some of the highest rates of patents per million which is a great indicator of the innovativeness of a country.

Entrepreneurship is alive and well in Europe.27 successful European young entrepreneurs, one from each EU member state, will meet 27 of China's most powerful entrepreneurs, including the billionaire founder of Renren (China’s answer to Facebook), at a 5 days Summit in China organised by “Power of Youth”.
At the start of 2011 a team of internationally focused leaders and entrepreneurs came together in both Brussels and Beijing to look at ways of inspiring a younger generation of successful entrepreneurs to take their enterprises global. This was part of the EU - China year of Youth and it was attended by China’s Premier Wen Jiabao.
“Power of Youth” (POY) was a major result of these events, and now a Summit of the best young entrepreneurs in Europe and China will take place in China in the autumn of 2011.
With the support of the European Commission (EC), the British Council and Tianjin local government in China (which gifted a valuable portion of land to the delegates in order to encourage the creation of new businesses in the area), “Power of Youth” will gather 54 young entrepreneurs – aged under 45 years old, together in Beijing this November for the inaugural “Power of Youth” Summit where they will have the chance to explore innovative ways to build and expand entrepreneurial businesses.
The event will provide a space where all participants can explore innovative ways of generating social and environmental capital from financially dynamic models and turn these into inspiring businesses. Additionally, the event will focus on taking these entrepreneurs existing businesses to global markets, as the European and Chinese political elite, industry leaders, top investors and policy makers are expected to attend and meet the next generation of successful entrepreneurs.
The “Power of Youth” has a strong business model and its member’s aim is to roll-out the programme, reinvesting in youth focused initiatives and expanding the initiative into India, the US and Brazil over the next four years.
Candidates
The members of POY have already launched their search for 27 equally interesting young entrepreneurs from the EU, aiming to get one entrepreneur from each EU member country. The primary criteria is for the candidate to be under 45 years old and able to prove him/herself as a successful business person with a track record of generating significant financial capital from entrepreneurial activity. On top of this track record of achievement, organisers are looking for people to show integrity and ambition to help others succeed.
The deadline for all applications is 31st August. In September the board of advisers will meet and select one candidate from each of the 27 European member states that will be matched with a further 27 from China.

Why aren't technical innovations being made in TX? NASA Houston hasn't done crap in 30 years. They pretty much killed manned spaceflight this past decade good ole' boying it to death.
