Nah, he was too young.
ok...remove McHale and put Dirk on Bird's 80's teams and I think the Celtics win zero rings. Let's face it Dirk can't rebound or play defense in any capacity. The 80's would have killed the poor dude...The 3 most important stats for a PF are Rebounds, Blocks, and PPG.
Dirk is decent in scoring but that's it. He's not good enough to take touches away from Bird and he certainly is a defensive liability. He would have gotten crushed by Magic's Lakers and absolutely pummeled by Zeke's Pistons...dude is like Durant, he only wants to shoot the ball he doesn't give a about other facets of the game.
The true measure of a player is whether they could have played in different era's...same for Timmy no way he could stand the brutal play of the 80's he'd go home crying back to the Islands...not saying they wouldn't have scored but they literally would have gotten their asses kicked since they're soft players. You think Malone knocking David Robinson out was harsh...it would have been a disaster...I get goose bumps just thinking about those guys playing in the 80's...
give me Moses Malone over these two cats any day...
Can you imagine Dirk or Timmy taking a hit like this and still wanting to play..
swap kobe for pippen and the bulls would've won no ring at all
Man
The things he would have done to the Lakers
Dirk+Aguirre+Donaldson+Tarpley+Harper+Blackman
88 sweep![]()
80s were pretty damn physical compared to the 90s and today. Dirk is a physically soft player; he's an offensive machine, but relishes in the fact that shooting fouls are easy to commit these days and he's a ing 7ft fadeaway machine. Wouldn't fly if they put Hakeem, Sampson, Robinson or Ewing on him.
He was blessed to be in this era.
TBH, all today's players are blessed to be in this era
Sounds like he'd have been a perfect fit for 80's era NBA ball.
A slow 6'8 guard who can't jump could never dominate in today's NBA either. Magic was blessed to be in his era.
yeah because we all know how those migranes would have affected Kobe...![]()

I would expect a Maverick fan to understand the value of a PG who has size and body control coupled with extremely keen court vision. Along with a high b-ball IQ, people like that (magic & kidd) are extremely rare and valuable in the NBA. Perhaps you should study different player types and gain insight on the value and disadvantages they hold.
As for Magic, you didn't really state any of his disadvantages. He was everything, except a player that could carry a team (IE Dirk, Jordan, Kobe, etc). The only thing that really makes him a big question mark in his overall ranking in greatest players of all time.
Not Dwight or other foul magnets.
In two words: No. Like you said he too soft. As far as Merlin, I've been saying for years he is Brad Daughterty at best if he played in the '80s.
I think there are only two players in today's NBA that could play in the '80s and still be a star: Kobe and Wade - that's it. Kobe for obvious reasons, Wade because of his physical style of play. I think he mentally could hang with the physical style that happened during that era. I don't think LBJ would cut it because despite being a physical specimen, he is allergic to post play. He can't use his size to overpower people in that era because they would be able to dish it back without repercussions. I don't think he could stand it.
that's some real ...Laker fanz alwayz brang da gudz....
Dirk is physically tough. You do realize he got his teeth knocked out by Karl Malone in a playoff game once and kept playing, right? So much of Dirk's development was going to an organization and a coach that believed in him when he was a malleable 19 year old. Who knows what would have happened if it had gone to a organization that didn't prioritize developing his game?
If he had been drafted into a good situation in the Showtime Era, he would've been fine.
Different toughness. I mean it in a literal sense. Players of that era took major beatings in the paint day by day, game by game and he wouldn't have his way in the parameter with players able to put a body on him like they were accustomed to. Getting your teeth knocked out and keeping on playing doesn't equate to taking hits and not losing performance over time.
Not knocking Dirk, he just isn't the kind of player that would be great in the 80s. No bias intended, I doubt Kobe would fit in too well either. This era is pampered with preemptive foul calls.
crofl another fail by the OP. should've just said 90's instead of talking out your ass
there was practically no defense in the 80's
There was but the refs let them play
And there was handchecking back then
Defense today consists largely of positioning on the court. If you can get to a spot before the guy with the ball gets there, you can claim it and he gets a foul called for running over you, since his momentum will not allow him to stop.
It's got little to do with the defense of the prior decades. Back then they would open your head up if you ran the lane too many times. Someone would put a lick on you and they might get tossed, but you were probably done as well.
These days people get suspended from crucial games for standing up and taking a step forward during a court scuffle. People get technical fouls for smiling or clapping their hands.
It's not the same.
as he is now he could have played and more than held his own. the problem with that is nobody starts out in their prime. dirk was a project and as a project in the 80s he would have been eaten alive and would have struggled to develop other than as a specialist. at best a foward danny ainge.
The bag Vs Phoenix withstanding.
tee, hee.
sure he could. he would have just picked up a ball and played like anyone else tbh.
True, he wouldn't get as many free throws obviously, but there's still nobody in the 80's who's gonna stop a 7 foot jump shooter
I was referring to the Phoenix game. Thanks for being redundant par per Cul quid pro quo.
Then that's what you should have said. I said it.
You make a swell fart catcher, D.
