Or, more accurately, if restricted free agency for first-rounders just finishing the 4th year of their rookie contract exists in the new CBA.
I read something about the union wanting to eliminate RFA after the 4th year for first-round picks and make it UFA instead, and the owners might be willing to concede that point to get what they want. Right now, a first-round pick has to wait 5 years to be a UFA, while a second-round pick only has to wait 4.
I read the same accounts. It seems like a small matter and, compared to the split and the severity of a new luxury tax, it does seem to be of no great importance.
In practice, however, the elimination of restricted free agency after the 4th year of the rookie contracts of 1st-round picks will have a real impact. That impact will be most profound for players good enough to command the max salary (and the teams that drafted them) at that point in their careers .
The RFA year served as a great incentive for those players to take a three max salary extension. The alternative was to take the one year qualifying offer (at a much lower salary) and risk the possibility of injury to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 5th year. For the very best players, RFA effectively tied them to the team that drafted them for their first seven years. With RFA eliminated, those players will hit the market after their 4th years.
Elimination of RFA will be good for the players and good for teams in the best markets. Teams in less attractive markets will find it even harder to keep elite players acquired through the draft.
i dont like how UFA for 2nd round picks, they be on end rookie minimums for 4 years...the 5th year when the FA, not much of a bump up in salary when the rookie in the first round is earning more then him
