I was puzzled by this when it came out and now the greybeards of the board are really laying out why it's a puzzling signing. Once again the FO shows they really don't know what they're doing with personnel, unless it pertains to the draft. When was the last FA signing that turned out good here? Gary Neal doesn't count - total accident.

I honestly don't understand the fuss. People are typing in a worried fashion like he's going to have a huge role for the Spurs. He's not. As a matter of fact, I'm willing to bet Neal/Manu will play more meaningful minutes at the back up PG spot (if everyone stays healthy and if none of the back-court is traded to net a big man (Anderson). He won't get any relevant minutes or be a major fixture in the rotation when games start having a lot of meaning come April.

Sure he hasn't been any where close to what he used to be, that's why Spurs signed him to a one year deal for the minimum. It's a low risk/high reward minimum signing. Breath people breath.

I understand the worry TIMVP poses but I would think the Spurs FO learned not to sign players who they hope can be better with this team (RJ). But I think they see something in him that could be a pleasant surprise to the team and the fans.

Photos of he and Duncan are on the internet of them playing together this summer so maybe Tim endorses his spot on the team. Who knows? Lets give him a shot...

How can he hurt? If he gets out of line you cut him and pick up the same level of scrub that's currently available in free agency.

A friend of mine (sorry for sounding like T2S), sent me short video's via smartphone of the workouts/pick up games at Tim's house earlier this month. He was fortunate enough to work out with Tim, George, T.J, Durant and a few others. He even was fortunate enough to go paint-balling with Tim (lucky bas ; and yes T.J went paint-balling too).

Again my condolences for sounding like T2S.

If I did the math right, once you account for the 66/82 prorated salaries, we're paying $1.01 million for him. If he sucks, cutting him won't be an issue.

TJ = Nasty Nick Mk II.

If we start Neal, Manu will effectively be the backup PG anyway, so why not just sign a competent guy who can defend, handle the ball and hit a stationary 3? That's all we need.

LJ seems to be in preseason form on this one. I'm sure his takes will be better when he gets into game shape.

    Bogut could use http://www.betterbasketball.com

If he played basketball half as good as he talked it, he'd be a lot better than what we see. Yi Jianlian is about to pass him to make Bogut the fourth best player on his team.

I'm not saying Bonner is a Bruce Bowen or anything, but I think he's going to be a nice addition and a Spur for a long time.

But the Spurs could still end up over the tax if they use the full MLE, so Ford could cost as much as $2M.

timvp you gotta be kidding me. So TJ Ford is so bad that every time he makes an appearance on the court his teams are more likely to lose? gmafb. Its a good signing, and he is going to ball out for us. The main worry is health. If he stays healthy we got ourselves a solid backup PG. I hope he grows his cornrows back, our cred level would skyrocket.

That is not a big financial commitment at all especially for a team munching down on 30M dollar contracts like they haven't eaten so well before.

Come on, bro, you know it doesn't work like that. The other free agent minimum PGs will be gone by the "Oops, TJ does suck" moment. The world doesn't pause to allow the Spurs to try him out.

Damn, lefty, in 15 years worth of posting the best you could find was a joke about Bogut and a true statement about Bonner? (Bonner has been a "nice addition" for a throw-in salary filler. And he has been a Spur for a long time. The problems with Bonner are A. The Spurs turned down Scola because of him B. Pop plays him too much C. Pop trusts him too much D. Pop pays him too much.)

If you are looking for timvp mistakes I suggest looking for how he thought signing Jackie Butler was a good thing, how he thought the RJ trade was a good one, how he thought Buckets was going to be waived in 2002 preseason, how he thought Greg Sutton had a shot to be a stud, among others.

Scro, it's not me saying that, I'm just reporting the facts. 58-44 when he doesn't play and 52-90 when he plays. Read into that what you will.

You all but said it. You were implying it with those posts. Its silly, this is a very solid signing. Personally I am happy to see one of my favorites help out the Spurs, but objectively a back up point guard is not going to elevate us to making the second round or beyond. At the minimum he is a non factor on first round team. There's little to no downside here considering the money involved.

That's yet to be seen, tbh... and really... as I stated earlier, I rather roll with TJ Ford than Chris Quinn... even if TJ Ford ends up flaming out...
