This trade makes no sense for Lakers unless it's followed by another trade. They are some rumors with Howard and Paul but it's far from sure they can get either.

    A weird move.
this trade might become the most genious move of the decade, if the following scenario materializes (and if it's a possible scenario under CBA rules, please tell me if it's legal):

LA has a negotiated a package for Gasol with HOU. this should still be on the table, it's a nice deal for the Rockets. this package now goes to ORL with Bynum. Scola goes to LA, that's why they might need the TE from the Odom trade.

    LA gets D12 and Scola
ORL gets Bynum, Martin, Dragic and picks
HOU gets Gasol and clears cap space for a run at Nene or (watch this) Mark Gasol !!!

if this is possible and legal (maybe needs some more adjustments), this is a win win win situation for all 3 teams IMO.

EDIT: the Magic need to include Hedo into the LA package, then it works. clears Hedo as well off the books now that Arenas will be the AC waiver.

I don't think trade exceptions can be combined. That is, two $5M trade exceptions can't be used to take back a $10M salary. Then again, I could be wrong.

Not sure how it's the Lakers' fault that they're willing to trade everyone to get Dwight Howard and the Spurs aren't willing to trade anyone to get anyone. It's also not the Lakers' fault that the Spurs traded for a guy with a ty contract and didn't trade it away when it had value, instead conspiring with the guy against the rules to extend his contract and pay him more money, praying that he was going to suddenly be something he'd never been in his career.
    My goodness.

the TE isn't combined. technically the Scola for TE trade is a seperate trade. and this works, b/c the TE is 8.9 million and Scola salary is 8.6 million.

the 3 team trade looks like this:

So why do the Rockets give up Scola for nothing?

Surely another team with cap space would take Scola and give them back some draft picks, a good young contract, etc.

Like Bruno said, the TE from Odom isn't enough to absorb Hedo, so that is a hiccup. They could want Bynum/Martin, but they would have to value players more than cap space which I somewhat doubt. I also don't see why they wouldn't want Scola in the deal if that was the case.

Scola is 31 and has 4 years and 40 million left on his contract.
yeah, teams will line up to take this contract and send back picks.

but you missed the major point, that is to clear cap space for either Nene or Mark Gasol. if it means to give up a good but aging player, for a younger and better player, you don't ask if the return could be slightly better.

and Rockets have a replacement in the house in Patterson and Hill will also get more minutes.

sorry friends, I can't do more than try to explain how it works technically in my limited english.
and yes, it would work without the Scola move as well, but the Scola move might be a requirement from the Rockets, b/c they have a bigger picture in mind. please notice that it either frees cap space and/or saves money AND it creates a TE as well. (a TE that could alo be used for a SG for example)

They're not giving him up for nothing in that scenario. They're giving him up as part of a package to get Gasol just as they were prepared to do in the Paul trade. It just occurs in a separate transaction to meet the rules.

True. Spurs have noone to blame but their own incompetencies and ups for their roster struggles over the past 4-5 years.

The Los Angeles Clippers plan to match the Golden State Warriors' offer sheet of four years and $40 million for center DeAndre Jordan, a league source said, a move that will practically force starting center Chris Kaman to seek a trade elsewhere, according to a second source.

Mavericks' Draft Pick In Odom Trade Top 20 Protected
    Dec 11, 2011 11:32 AM EST

The Mavericks traded an $8.9 million trade exception, plus a future protected pick to the Lakers for Lamar Odom.

The pick is top-20 protected, meaning that if the Mavericks are selecting in the top-20 picks of the draft, they keep the pick.

Why should he be pissed? After all, he dodged a bullet because he almost wound up in New Orleans.

I meant pissed at LA for trying to dump him. He took the loyalty thing to another level.

Realgm commented that LA is now focusing on trading Gasol and Bynum for Dwight Howard...hmm, to me Howard by himself is not better than Gasol and Bynum, and for sure not without Odom still around.

I think the Lakers are putting too much hope in Howard. I think this easily could be a step back considering they are emptying all their big man depth. To me, Howard is overrated. He doesn't seem to be a player who is going to win a big game for you, which is kind of helpful in the playoffs.

So as a Spurs fan, I'm happy to see LA gut their depth just to make news. Gasol has twice as many skills as Howard. Howard has the better potential but I've never considered him a great center like those we saw in the 80s.

I was thinking about Dwight and Kobe on the same team. The big game fourth quarter folds should be legendary.

You guys be interested in Speights?

Nuggets are apparently in talk with the sixers about trying to acquire him for a future 2nd rd pick.

Decent player if he can stay healthy
