Mitt Romney Attacks Sesame Street, Says He’ll Put Advertisements On Big Bird To Pay For Public Television

“We’re not going to kill Big Bird,”Mitt Romney declared as he campaigned in Iowa on Wednesday. In his quest to prove that he’s more conservative than his Republican opponents, Romney took aim at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which airs Sesame Street, and the National Endowment for the Arts program.

Rather than simply slashing defense spending in half to achieve his goal of cutting the federal budget by $500 billion, Romney intends to eliminate both of the above mentioned programs to save a paltry $5 million which won’t even have an effect on the budget according to the Congressional Budget Office. But Romney said he’s not trying to kill Big Bird, so how does he intend to keep Sesame Street alive? Romney says he’s going to put advertisements on Big Bird and leave the beloved Sesame Street in the hands of the greedy and corrupt private sector.

“Big Bird is going to have advertisements, all right? And we’re going to have endowments for the arts and humanities, but they’re going to be paid for by private charity, not by taxpayers. My test is, is a program so critical that it’s worth borrowing money from China to pay for it?”

The problem is that corporations could meddle with the content of Sesame Street or pull advertising when a right-wing group demands it, like when Lowes abandoned All-American Muslim because a hate group sent them a letter demanding they pull ads from the show. It’s easy to see why Republicans hate the arts and educational shows so much. They think creativity and learning are ‘socialism.’ Many artists, authors, and musicians have found success because of the National Endowment for the Arts and millions of children across the country enjoy Sesame Street.

Yet another problem with Romney’s statement is that the government borrows billions of dollars from China to pay for the ballooning defense spending. You don’t see Romney calling for cuts to military spending, which is by far the biggest part of the federal budget. Cutting defense spending in half would shrink the debt, and America would still have the biggest defense budget in the world. Apparently to conservatives, war is more important than the arts and educating our kids.

If Romney wants to place ads on Big Bird, that’s fine, as long as he places ads on himself first to show the world who sponsors him and his corporate agenda. He might as well tattoo PROPERTY OF WALL STREET on his ass.

~~What kind of MITT is this guy smoking?

Sickening the way the wingnuts are trying to kill PBS. PBS is literally the only intelligent programming in this country now that Discovery has gone redneck let's shoot and blow things up. It's going to be a sad day when heads like Romney win their war against knowledge and PBS becomes all-reality TV.

How much money do you give them each month?

It would seem PBS agrees with Romney...

PBS is breaking from its long-term model and adding commercials to shows, PBS officials told member stations at a recent conference in Orlando.

I don't donate monthly, but I have bought various PBS DVDs and assorted swag from the shop.

As someone who had no cable for many years when my child was young, I had PBS on all day long. I still credit my kid's love for geography to these people:

I also just don't understand the Republican desire to attack the Arts.

Carmen San Diego and Wishbone were the two examples I had in mind, excellent shows that inspired me to travel the world and read for fun.

    PBS swag = trill

Nova already has to get what seems like half of their episodes from the BBC now; they just re-narrate them in American instead of British English.

So he is going to run to the rescue of the American people by cutting .0001% of the Federal Budget?

I can't wait to see which clown emerges from the GOP primary car first. I'm pretty sure it's gonna be Romney, but he is going to have a LOT of baggage like this to overcome when he is trying to look presidential next to Obama.

Hopefully Mitt can name some federal agencies he would eliminate, if asked. Maybe he will tell us we need to end the Fed or investigate 9-11 so he can pick up the Paulite contingent.

I feel almost sorry for the board Republicans. Your party has let you down this go around.

Honestly, this is the kind of that makes me hesitant to vote for ANY Republican.

As much as I am not enthusiastic about Obama, a vote for the Republican candidate means the potential of people who think that cutting funding for PBS is some kind of major priority might staff the White House.

Iowa, which is about as lily white and evangelical as it gets, sets the tone for the Republican party?

Republicans bristle when I describe the GOP as being "of rich white guys, by rich white guys, and for rich white guys", goes on to leave the first primary to.... rich white guys. (edit: the candidates, not Iowans in general)

There will always be tokens like Cain or Steele, and they are held up, cynically as all get out in my opinion, as some kind of proof that the GOP is hip to the interests of brown people, or that their rhetoric or priorities somehow address the concerns of the non-white people in the US, but sheesh.

    Iowa? Seriously?

I don't like the attacks on public broadcasting either but I am getting a little tired of the "Republicans want to kill Sesame Street" way the subject is treated in articles like these. PBS and NPR are about a lot more than Big Bird, and frankly if PBS did become ad-supported, Sesame Street would probably be one of the few programs to survive it.

Yes, it's important that we teach children at an early age that their life is defined by their productivity.

Just because republicans want to end subsidizing left of center programming doesn't mean they are attacking the program itself.

PBS can live or fall by merit like the rest of us and the rest of media has to.
