Why no Shaq to LA? Kobe didn't matter at all in that equation
real talk if Kobe isn't traded to LA, New Orleans wouldn't have a team today...The landscape of the NBA would have forever been changed...No Shaq to LA, no Dwight in Orlando, and the Hornets would have never made it to New Orleans...in essence the city of New Orleans owes Kobe Bryant for bringing basketball to their desolate city...real talk
http://www.slymf.com/forum/what-if-p...ory-41324.htmlOf course we all know the Hornets didn't take the hidden gem that had fallen into their lap in Kobe Bryant and instead they trade him. The Hornets traded the draft rights of Kobe Bryant to the Lakers for center Vlade Divac on July 1, 1996. Vlade Divac was a young, established center and a very solid player, a player that would also have a very nice long career, just not quite as illustrious as Kobe Bryants.
A quick history lesson on the Charlotte Hornets: in 1991 the Hornets took talented power forward Larry Johnson in the draft, and of course in 1992 the Hornets selected big time center Alonzo Mourning in the draft and the franchise takes off. They now had 2 players with 20 and 10 capabilities and formed one of the best young trios with a player selected in 1991 Kendrall Gill. With three future 20 point scorers and a great duo in the post the Hornets had their first winning season in 1993 with a 44-38 record.
The next few years were marked by injuries to Johnson and Mourning, though the Hornets did get back to the playoffs in 1994–95, notching the first 50-win season in franchise history. However, the Chicago Bulls bounced Charlotte from the playoffs three games to one in the first round.
In the offseason the team dealt Mourning to the Miami Heat for guard Glen Rice and center Matt Geiger and guard Khalid Reeves. Geiger and Johnson tied for the team lead in rebounds, while Johnson and Rice provided balanced but high-powered scoring and All-Star guard Kenny Anderson ran the point for the injured Muggsy Bogues. Despite the changes, the Hornets failed to qualify for the playoffs during the 1995–96 season.
The offseason was again marked by vast changes: Anderson declined to re-sign, Johnson was shipped to the Knicks for power forward Anthony Mason, and center Vlade Divac was acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers for future superstar Kobe Bryant, who was picked 13th in the draft by the Hornets. The new-look Hornets were apparently even better, with Divac and Geiger providing the center combination, Mason averaging a double-double and all-NBA third team honors, Bogues back at the point, and Rice having the finest season of his career, finishing third in the league in scoring and earning all-NBA second team honors.
And thats where this all starts. This whole franchise was buzzing and from 1996 through 2001 the team was extremely successful. In 2000 the team had its best season, making the playoffs and making the conference semis for the first time in franchise history. However events would cause the demise of the Hornets. The season, however, was overshadowed by events off the court. The team's popularity had begun to sag due to fan discontent with Shinn's personnel moves; he had reportedly traded Mourning and several other stars out of an unwillingness to pay them market value. Michael Jordan, a North Carolina native, began negotiations to become part-owner of the team, but talks collapsed when Shinn refused to grant Jordan total control over the basketball side of the operation.
The event that generated the most headlines came when a woman claimed that Shinn had raped her in 1997. While he was able to fend off a civil suit, the trial severely tarnished his reputation in the city. The team's attendance dropped off even further and never recovered; the consensus was that while Charlotte was as basketball-crazy as ever, fans took out their anger at Shinn on the team. Of course in 2002 the team moved to New Orleans because of attendance.
So the question remains, what happens if the Hornets take Bryant and keep him. Would they still be in Charlotte after winning championships and championships?
Why no Shaq to LA? Kobe didn't matter at all in that equation
Congratulations on just finding out what was already obvious to many people.
Hilarious concept by the way. Good work whatever slymf is
Shaq would have stayed in Orlando with Penny if Kobe had not been traded...He saw he had a young stud in Kobe and decided to roll the dice.
It's not obvious to you clowns...stop fronting...you gots in New Orleans ought to be on your ing knees giving that N|gga thanks for bringing a team to your city..ungrateful bas s
Real talk - would Kobe still be a rapist if he hadn't gone to LA and had his ego stroked?
I wish terrible things for you and those close to you
Yeah, it is. It's pretty goddamn obvious to everybody on here except for you.
Again, congratulations on just finding this out. But remember, your stupid revelations are not always thread-worthy.
It's hilarious because that is true...Charlotte would have stayed put if they kept Kobe...they ed up royally in that deal...New Orleans owes it's existence to Kobe wanting to be in LA...go ahead and give that n|gga thanks![]()
If wishes were horses beggars would ride![]()
So you owe your existence to Kobe...I can appreciate your candor now statr showing that n|gga the respect he deserves...your ass would not be posting here if not for Kobe wanting to be in LA...deal with that and stop all the gotdam fronting
LOL @ thinking Shaq would not have ended up in Hollywood to film his 5 whatever movies and drop albums etc.
Shaq going to the Lakers was about 2 things
A) Multipying his image
B) Running away from the Bulls
Shaq thought and correctly knew he was good enough to take the Vancouver Grizzlies to the Finals so it didn't matter who his running mate was
As my buddy said a few nights ago ''NBA always with it's shady trades''. Shaq would have ended up in LA one way or another.
Where is the logic in thinking a #13 draft pick & boy from high school was the domino that brought possibly the greatest post player ever to the Lakers. Vlade was leaving one way or another
The Hornets would probably not have survived in Charlotte with Kobe anyway. They certaintly would not have won any les with just Kobe. He would have still needed a Shaq/Duncan post player to fall in his lap. Without Shaq/Gasol/Bynum.... Kobe is essentially Allen Iverson & Dominique Wilkins
So ultimately Lakers still win a couple les atleast with JUST Shaq, depending on whether he is run out of town maybe he still finishes with 3 or more.
Actually, the Kobe-Vlade trade did help the Lakers acquire Shaq. The trade for Kobe cleared more cap room for the Lakers. So yeah, Kool is right even though he didn't know why.
nice try MJ fanboy but you couldn't be more wrong...
If the Hornets could have worked something out with Bryant, their '96-97 starting lineup would have probably looked something like this:
C Matt Geiger (came over from the Heat in the Mourning deal)
F Anthony Mason
F Glen Rice
G Kobe Bryant
G Muggsy Bogues
Not a bad lineup considering Rice had his best year statistically in that season, earning him Second Team All-NBA honors.
The Hornets didn't have a draft pick in 1997, but in 1998 they selected Ricky Davis from Iowa. Davis has had a decent career, but if the Hornets have Kobe, they don't need another shooting guard.
the Hornets would be set with their first round pick in 1999, who actually was point guard Baron Davis.
Your lineup then looks like this for the 1999-2000 season:
C Elden Campbell
F Derrick Coleman
F Mason/Harrington
G Kobe Bryant
G Baron Davis
An All Star caliber lineup for sure. With Rice and Geiger gone, Coleman and Campbell would take over their respective spots.
And all this could've been if Kobe had stayed.
here is the link
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/3...ed-kobe-bryant
And that team is winning 0 rings....still
And how would the Hornets draft so high (Baron Davis) if they were obviously improved with the GREATEST OF ALL TIME Kobe on the roster for 2 seasons
The whole logic is ing stupid and just exposes how overrated Kobe has become, the NBA's version of Derek Jeter
hey butt boy...when did LA win it's first le during the ShaKobe era?
you are as stupid as advertised...of course they wouldn't have won from 96-99 they didn't start winning until Kobe came into his own but they would have been able to get Baron without tanking..
The Davis pick is beyond not hypothetical
Point are
- Shaq goes to LA regardless of Kobe
- Shaq wins rings in LA regardless of Kobe
So your equation fails at step 1.
How and How?
There was no path for him to get there and he did a great job of winning a le with that great all-star lineup he had in Orlando didn't he...![]()
Charlotte (and/or the Hornets) would have no NBA les anyway.
And most likely, same with Kobe.
Look at Kool trying to undervalue Shaq.
Path?
They would have traded Vlade ala the Grizzlies dealing Gasol. You know handing players over
He lost to Hakeem & MJ. I'd say he did very well. Have you looked at those rosters he had in Orlando?
Penny and that's it
how many les would Duncan have if Kobe was in Charlotte or would Shaq have ram-rodded Duncan and the Spurs with Allen Iverson![]()
And Dennis Scott & Nick Anderson are all star players now
You're insane...Shaq had Penny and a shooters all around him..just like MJ had his whole career...MJ had shooters all around him...and 2 of the greatest defensive players in the history of the league and 1 top 50 player along with the greatest rebounder in NBA history...spar me the lesson please...
