Source: Josh McDaniels likely to Pats

With offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien agreeing to become Penn State's next coach, New England now is expected to hire Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as an offensive assistant coach, according to an NFL source.

McDaniels likely will succeed O'Brien as the Patriots' offensive coordinator next season, but he was to begin working immediately for the Patriots this season, returning to the team he left in 2009 to take the Broncos' head coaching job, the source said.

O'Brien will work as the Patriots' offensive coordinator for the remainder of this season.

But McDaniels truly will have gone from worst to first overnight, leaving the Rams and being a part of the Patriots team preparing for next weekend's divisional playoff game.

Adam Schefter is ESPN's NFL Insider.

Well, I'm not happy about it, but it makes McDaniels look like a total pussy. Leave New England for the Denver job, Belichick then gets your career off to a rocky start deliberately alienating Cutler by spreading rumors about a Cassel trade, and a few years later you come crawling back to the guy for a job.

I guess using tight ends in the passing game and having at least a decent running game was fun while it lasted. Not sure how McDaniels is gonna run his offense without a deep threat to stretch the field.

Btw if the Patriots don't win a playoff game this year I'll have lost any faith I still had in Brady. Their possible first round matchups are Cincinnati, Pittsburgh w/ a ton of injuries, or Denver. If they can't beat one of those 3 teams in Foxboro Brady will never be good in the playoffs again.

The only team with a remote chance of beating New England in the Divisional Round is Pittsburgh--and even that's looking sketchy with all their injuries. I'd have to say they're a virtual lock to play in the AFCCG. My only cause for concern would be that they haven't beaten a team who finished above .500 this year...but then again they've only played 2.

What happens if there is a miracle and Tebow gets the Broncs to NE, and then he outplays Brady? McDaniel would look like a genius.

Of course there is no chance of this happening, but it would be hilarious to see a team beat their ex-head coach in the playoffs

Crofl Tebow outplaying Brady. With some hard work and dedication though, Tebow might outplay Rex Grossman someday.
