Chapter 24.
I had moved to my chair and was watching a Tarzan movie when I heard them come thru the back door. They'd been out there a couple hours, if not more.
"You must be so thirsty, Shea. I'll get you a cold one." Emily sounded wonderful.
"Thank you, princess." They sat at the kitchen table and talked about work and such. I half listened/half watched my movie. She could go on forever when you got her started. And Shea, God bless him, had started her up good and proper.
"I wonder where Jake got off to?" She commented after a while.
"I'm in here, you two." I called out to them.
"Oh, eavesdropping on us, eh?" Emily teased.
They walked into the living room hand-in-hand. I hit the mute button.
"Let's go shopping now, ok, guys?"
"Honey, I'm whacked out. You two go ahead without me. I'll stick around and mind the store if that is agreeable. Ok, sweetheart, Shea?"
"Oh, well, ok, I guess." Emmie sounded cautious.
Shea excused himself to use the facilities. Once he was gone, Emmie came to me, sat on my lap, and hugged my neck. "Thank you, for this morning, Jakey. It was so much fun playing croquet with Shea. He let me win. He said he didn't, but, I know better. I like him so, Jake."
"I know you do, baby. You two have fun shopping, and perhaps luncheon before you head back? Call me and you can bring me back something, ok?"
Her eyes welled. "You're so good to me, Jake. You know when I want alone time and you know when I need you with us. You're the best, and I love you so, sweetheart."
"C'mon, now, no crying, Em. Please. Just have fun this afternoon, and this evening we'll have a cookout with the cowboy. How does that sound?"
"Terrific!" She dabbed her eyes with a tissue just as Shea left the bathroom and joined us again.
"Let me freshen up just a little bit before we get going. Ok, boys?" She didn't even climb the steps to her bathroom, instead going the shorter route to the downstairs one.
"She's something else again, Jake. A force of nature."
"I know, Shea. Emily is a true wonderment."
"I'm ready!" Emmie bounded almost instantly from the bathroom. "Let's move it, Shea. Lot's of shopping to do." We all laughed easily. A quick peck on the cheek for me, she held out her hand to Shea who grasped it tightly. They headed for the door.
"Take good care of our girl, Shea."
"Without a doubt, Jake. Adios."
I watched from behind the front screen door. Sure enough she released his hand as they descended the porch steps.
She led the way to her car. I smiled at the sight.
And presently they were gone.
