Some protesters claimed they were trying to flee police by running through the YMCA rather than take over the building.

Police in riot gear moved in, firing smoke grenades, tear gas and bean-bag projectiles to drive the crowd back.

"Officers were pelted with bottles, metal pipe, rocks, spray cans, improvised explosive devices and burning flares," the Oakland Police Department said in a statement. "Oakland Police Department deployed smoke and tear gas."

Some activists, carrying shields made of plastic garbage cans and corrugated metal, tried to cir vent the police line, and surged toward police on another side of the building as more smoke canisters were fired.

"The City of Oakland welcomes peaceful forms of assembly and freedom of speech, but acts of violence, property destruction and overnight lodging will not be tolerated," police said in a statement.

Sergio Ballesteros, 30, has been involved in Occupy LA since the movement had its California launch in October. But this week, his activism took an abrupt turn when he was arrested on a felony charge — lynching.

Under the California penal code, lynching is “taking by means of a riot of any person from the lawful custody of any peace officer," where "riot" is defined as two or more people threatening violence or disturbing the peace. The original purpose of the legal code section 405(a) was to protect defendants in police custody from vigilante mobs — especially black defendants from racist groups.

apparently americans have the right to peaceably assemble.....until authorities get tired of them hanging around
I guess you don't think trashing an area, and blocking the access of others is any kind of violation then?

I saw two of the city block size parks yesterday when I went to downtown Portland. They had they fenced off and new grass planted. Mostly dirt. The next park over had healthy grass where the protesters didn't occupy.

You have already stated your distrust for black Americans already, its a foregone conclusion how you would feel if 60,000 blacks walked down your street.

My God. Go back and read my words very carefully. Break out a 5th grade English book if you want. I never said any such thing as you implied.

I'm laughing at the same time as to your brainwashed reverse racist at ude, or is it racist?

Do you believe blacks are inferior so they need quota's in place to jet education, jobs, etc? I don't. I see them as equals.

ACLU of Texas, Central Texas Chapter President, Debbie Russell, was arrested for being mouthy with APD. Deb's not smelly that I know of.

Drove by around the start of the curfew. The police presence was, um, significant.

No noticeable odor, but I had the windows up.

Their plan to take revenge on city officials that destroyed their utopia is off to a great start.

When one protester asked those present if they knew who on the Austin City Council was up for re-election, very few hands went up. A similar query about the date of the May 12 election likewise produced a light response, and incorrect information about the actual date.

    OMG...

If they aren't voting in elections, what do they expect?

The 99% not voting... Does that mean the 1% are the only ones voting?

That isn't too far from the truth in Austin.

Well they did march to a homeless shelter to demand and end to homelessness. That'll show...the homeless....?

I now understand who the 99% are and why I am one of the 1%.

They don't know who they are voting for. They listen to the news, unions, etc. to tell them who to vote for, or vote by party. They don't learn who they are actually voting for. As part of the 1%, I at least do some research as to whom I vote for.

Political apathy is rampant even in this forum, so why should it be surprising at a OWL movement rally.....still, at least they are taking their first steps toward not being so apathetic about government by gathering and thinking of ways to make government more responsive to voters and not just business.....better than the ' it they are all corrupt' at ude from many posters here

That's nice, but they've had four months to figure out when the local elections are being held.

Without corporate sponsorship, like the tea potty, they are founding a political movement which could be a dominate force in city, state and national elections for years to come, that takes time...
