why not buy a new one? tvs and a dirt cheap man
so like i looked online and a lot of people say to change a capacitor...so i opened up the tv and took out the board. Problem is, I cant find which capacitors are bad. On "how to" sites, they said the capacitors top would be buldging..but mine arnt.
I do see some black stuff on the bottom though. Is that leakage or is that some sort of glue? I dont know about this stuff but they said it is as simple as using a soldering gun.
Can anyone tell which is the bad ones?

That looks like leakage, though most commonly the leakage will come from the top and you will see those X's on the top of the capacitors either bulging out, or split.
But since capacitors are usually soldered to the board using a soldering compound which is usually silver or copper, I doubt that black gunk is glue. And if those things are leaking out onto the board, then just replacing the capacitors may not help much.
Your options would be to
1) Replace just the capacitors first and see if it helps (since capacitors are cheap and it's not terribly difficulty, as long as you have soldering experience).
2) If it doesn't help or if you don't feel like messing around with step 1, then look online for a replacement board. Replacing the whole board is much easier than replacing the caps, usually a matter of a series of screws and unhooking a few cables. My Dad's Samsung had a power distribution issue and when we opened it up, we saw several bulging caps, so we just replaced the board and it works likes new now.
3) Take the money you would spend on steps 1 and 2, and apply it towards looking for a new TV.
Aren't tv's FRU's? Meaning if your tv's broke don't open it because you can electrocute your balls off?
Buy a new tv.
well..as you guys know from my other threads....I just bought a Sharp 70 inch LED and a new laptop for my wife in the past 2 months...thats $3700 out of my pocket already. lol
Also, its a 40 inch i need to replace and if i buy a new one, it's gonna have to have WIFI and be 120ghz. The cheapest i found is like $719.00 =(
If anyone else can find a LED TV, 40 to 42 inch with WIFI and 120ghz for less, please let me know.
Yeah, those caps look like they leaked to the bottom, which might have ed the board too. Is it a separate power board? You might be able to just buy the power board and swap it out. Do you have a P/N for the board?

What is the brand/model of the TV? Is it a GE Tv?
Its an "A-Star"....dont even think they are in business anymore. And i really dont know anything about these boards. One of my friends said when i take off one of the capacitors the black leakage will chip pieces of the board off so its permantly broke.
never heard of it... Those caps are shot... you could try replacing them and hope the board didn't get damaged. The other thing you could do is try to find a similar broken set on Ebay or somewhere and see if the power board is still ok.
FRU's (field replaceable units) actually refers to boards and parts that ARE safe to replace in the field.
But yes, with most TVs and other large electronics, the power boards and internal components can still carry a charge for a while after unplugging them, so it's a good idea to let the unit sit unplugged for ~24 hours before removing the casing and messing with the boards. Also, proper electrostatic safe measures should be taken to prevent while working internally to prevent further damage (don't wear any polyester or long sleeves, try to use tools that won't carry a charge, wear an electrostatic bracelet or at least touch the metal frame to try to ground yourself before touching boards, etc).
At least we are past the days of CRTs and having to discharge them or have them blow your face off.
42" 1080p lcd tvs are like $400
might be able to just find the board itself on ebay, i know they have them for samsungs, which have notoriously bad caps. I got mine fixed for free a few years ago.

My Dad called them and described the symptoms (had power, but would not turn on...was stuck in "energy saver" mode), and they basically told him he'd have to send it in and that the work would be out-of-warranty.
We never talked to them after we diagnosed the blown caps though.
So my coworker just told me to buy the one you posted (its $529 at amazon) then buy a $249 ps3 to get netflix and a bluray player.
