The NBA became wildly popular under his watch. His biggest failures are that abortion of a season in 1999, Tim Donaghy, and this most recent lockout. The 80's saved the NBA, Jordan made it thrive, Kobe and Shaq carried the torch, and now LeBron, D12, and other great talents are doing it. The infusion of European talent has played a big part too, obviously. Superstars like Dirk have made the NBA more global as well.

CWEBB gettin' bored at the arc, turnin' his back on Horry and startin' back up that lane.

I get nervous thinkin' about what woulda happened if he'd a listened to Adelman outta that time out...."Don't leave Horry, Chris. Just climb in his BVDs with him and play dead. And we go back to the state capitol with a banjo on our in' knee."

As Laker GM, I'm sure Stern's greatest moment was getting Gasol for Kwame Brown. That was a decent deal, because it got K. Bryant two more coattail rings, to go with his three coattail rings courtesy of Shaquille. That gives him five coattail rings...the same number Derek Fisher has.

Otherwise, the ritualistic jamming of K. Bryant down our collective throats is his second greatest moment...wait, that was more like a moment that lasted 12 years. Oh well, why let a rape and a payoff stop you from lauding a guy like he's the greatest human to hit the Earth since Jesus? But Jesus didn't have the ego to shoot 24 times a game, right Mr. Stern?

So if you're a Laker fan, you should begin mourning at this news. Your life will never be as easy as it was under David Stern's watch. His official le was NBA Commissioner, but he's been working for the Lakers full-time since Gasol came to town.

For everyone complaining about Stern, be glad the league wasn't run by a complete -up like Selig. Selig looked the other way and now because of it the greatest players of his generation will never be in Cooperstown. Some legacy he has left his sport.

He wasn't alone. Media knew it and rode the lightening all the way up. They're a line of stewardship for the sport, but, they vacated that mantle because they could make a dollar and dime off of it.

Stern did one thing right: he cleaned up the drugs and got rid of all of the coke addicts. The league was awash in cocaine and irrelevant, playing the NBA Finals tape delayed on TV. That's how unpopular it was. Once he did that, the next big thing was bound to blow up, with the fans flocking back to the shiny clean new league. That next big thing was Bird/Magic.

Stern should have been fined for the 2003 Finals. Never seen two teams play so miserable as the Spurs and Nets did in that series.

It's the chicken & egg thing. Which came first Bird/Magic, or, Stern cleaning up the drugs? Obviously Bird/Magic. They supplied the impetus and the monetary windfall necessary for Stern to clean it up. And he was shrewd enough to jump on it like ugly on an ape.

    He's never looked back.

All sports go through some kind of scandal--and the Donaghy one could've been crippling to the league--but somehow it was largely swept under the rug. As it stands now, Davy is one of the most successful Commissioners of any sport ever.

Take away 1999 and 2007 and it's been 30 years of great, exciting basketball.

Grand point. And who sheepherded (swept) it? Media.

Stern is the best, and most under-appreciated, commish in sports, IMO...

Selig and Bettman are terrible..Goodell has one of the easier jobs in sports..
