A US soldier in Afghanistan has killed 10 civilians and wounded five in Kandahar province after suffering a breakdown, officials say.
He left his military base in the early hours of the morning and opened fire after entering local homes; women and children are said to be among the dead.
Nato said it was investigating the "deeply regrettable incident".
Anti-US sentiment is already high in Afghanistan after US soldiers burnt copies of the Koran last month.
US officials have apologised repeatedly for the incident at a Nato base in Kabul, but they failed to quell a series of protests and attacks that killed at least 30 people and six US troops.
Local people have reportedly gathered near the base in Panjwai district to protest about Sunday's killings, and the US embassy is advising against travel to the area.

You missed the point, Chump. Defending this guy in Afghanistan is just as stupid as defending the Fort Hood murderer.
I don't know if anybody here made excuses for Nadal Hasan, but a lot of people have tried to excuse it. I don't give a why either one did it, both of them need to be put down. Maybe they both went ape- crazy, I don't know. But I'm guessing they both knew that killing a bunch of people is wrong, and has consequences. 'Nuff said.
I will say that there are a lot of people here in this country who should be glad that we don't react the way the Afghans are going to, over an incident like this. (And don't anybody start with the rationalizations about how the situations are different. Do that, and you're no better than the people defending the shooters.)
Sad to hear...word is that many of the victims were women and children. I'm glad to see the leadership come out so quickly and strongly against the act. Hopefully it's enough to prevent more riots.

shooting at people in afghanistan when they are not shooting at them and have their weapon in their hand and are not around any buildings is against our Rules of Engagement. So in any unread report of this whatso ever, what this "soldier" did was wrong. He will be punished harshly. This should not go against the 99.99% of soldiers who professionally deal with the politics and nonsense of american wars.

I am a little confused, was this post a preemptive strike? Has someone posted that this is indicative of all of our soldiers over there? If so, then I also disagree. In fact, I would like to say that I am amazed at the discipline that the soldiers display in general despite all that they are dealing with over there. However you got real defensive really quickly and introduced an aspect to the conversation which would likely not otherwise have been introduced.

U.S. soldier acquitted of murder in Iraq

BAGHDAD - A military panel Friday acquitted U.S. Army Spc. Jorge G. Sandoval on charges he killed two unarmed Iraqis, but it convicted him of planting evidence on one of the men in attempt to cover up the shooting.
Sandoval, 22, of Laredo, Texas, had faced five charges in the April and May deaths of two unidentified men. He was found not guilty of the two murder charges, but the panel decided he had placed a detonation wire on one of the bodies to make it look as if the man was an insurgent.
