In the lock-out shortened 1998-1999 NBA season, 2nd year Spurs guard Jaren Jackson defended and shot well from long range in key games. Jaren helped the Spurs sail through the playoffs (19-2) and win their first championship. With his hard-nosed defensive style and an entertaining tongue wagging, head slapping 3-point basket ritual, Jaren most notably helped the Spurs close down The Great Western Forum.

Is Danny Green the Spurs' version of JJ 13 years removed? The playoffs will tell us more, but Green's performance offensively has been better. Given the NBA hand-check rules in 1998-99 led to lower shooting percentages and points output, the adjusted numbers for Jackson and Green are in the same ballpark. Green has greater length and is 2 inches taller than Jaren, but their roles and positive impact on the team are beginning to take a similar appearance.

For those who remember Jaren and his brief but impactful performance, Danny Green has an opportunity to contribute in similar fashion in this year's playoffs, depending on the health of Manu & Buckets and the minutes distribution.

Danny's +.400 FG and .440 3-pt shooting accuracy has been nothing short or amazing thus far.

Is that not the famous "I will not be mishandled" picture a little above there with the young Nash and Kidd?

O yeah. I hadn't thought of that famous AJ quote but yeah, maybe so.

Not even close.....Jaren had a great year and got a very good contract and then came to camp looking like Fat Albert. That pissed the out of Pop and that point he pretty much was dead wood to the Spurs Organization.

Green loves basketball he just wants to play and it shows he will always come into camp in shape, and always try to improve his game every summer.

    Jaren had a great year.
    This is on-topic.

As I said, Jaren had a brief but impactful performance that year.

Pretty good comparison. Jackson was an indispensable piece of the 1999 championship teams. What's funny is he didn't really shoot much better in '99 or during the championship run, just the timing of his made threes were better. On top of that, he was a very underrated defender.

Today's NBA is more based on athleticism but Green is comparable if you adjust for that. If he can time his threes well, he too can become a legend.

    P.S.

I always thought of Jaren Jackson as 6-foot-6 -- the same size as Danny Green. I looked it up and the first couple sites list him at 6-foot-4. But those sites also list him at 195 and Jaren Jackson hasn't been 195 since middle school . Other sites list him 6-foot-6 and 225, which is closer to the size he was when he was on the Spurs (at least before he got his contract).

Tbh, that's a good example of why the drop in accuracy from RJ to SJax shouldn't be a huge deal. Jaren Jackson wasn't a good shooter but when he made the clutch shots on the road in pressure situations, those three-pointers felt like five-pointers during that championship run.

Danny Green seems to also not mind letting it fly when the bright lights are on. We'll see if that translates to the playoffs.

He practically won those games against the Lakers in 3 and 4, and game 1 and 2 at home vs the Knicks.

We've seen Bonner fail repeatedly to know 3pt percentage doesn't mean much if you don't have the confidence to take and make big shots.

Good comparison. I loved after Danny Green made those 2 huge 3's last night and got that steal and dunk that he had a big smirk/smile on his face as to say "Ahh yeah es!"

So how was Jackson's contract situation after the Spurs won the le? Was his value overly inflated? Did he bolt for more money? etc.

Danny Green is doing much, much more in the Fianls than what JJ did in 1999 Playoffs.
