The league could hand out trophies that were proportional to the number of games played that season, with 82 being a full sized trophy......
The trophy is still the same size. The ring still has diamonds in it.

I noticed the same thing and hoped nobody else did.
We were much better than any other team. It was not even close. Play 50, Play 100, we had a crushing D that just wore teams down. Gosh I think we lost 2 whole playoff games.
End of story.
Yes *
* not really no
Phil Jackson: trolling Spurfans for 13 years now.
It was a great playoff run, the start of the Duncan era (not to mention, the Memorial Day Miracle).
Let Phil have his small victory.
Sharkenleo do you post on TexAgs?
Nice avatar![]()
LMAO I noticed that too.![]()
What gave me away?
What's your texags handle?
Exactly my take back then. Even 2002 DRob was injured during the Lakers series.
So its goes like this:
NBA Champions
95-96 Chicago Bulls
96-97 Chicago Bulls
97-98 Chicago Bulls
1999 San Antonio Spurs
99-00 LA Lakers*
00-01 LA Lakers**
01-02 LA Lakers***
*Tim Duncan DNP playoffs
**Derek Anderson DNP 1st two games against LA
***David Robinson DNP 1st two games against LA
I have to give '02 and '04 to the Lakers. The Spurs really didn't have any excuse not to win those series, and they got whupped. Those fourth quarter slappings were embarrassing to watch.
It's interesting that Phil Jackson not only had good players but he was extremely lucky. He never had to deal with injuries during the playoffs.
I remember Mike Bibby comparing last year's Heat team's defense to the 1999 Spurs
ROTFLMAO![]()
Was going to say the same.
The asterisk came up quite often at first, and it's true that it would have been better to win the first championship in a normal season. But 3 more rings after that and I haven't heard the asterisk being mentioned in years.
Doesn't bother me at all, in fact I can't wait until we get our 2012*
Anyone who says or believes that is a ing moron. And phil did more for his teams over the years by ing about the refs than any coaching he ever did. How many times did we see Tony score at will the first couple games, then all the sudden get raped everytime he drove the lane and the whistles disappeared.
Your user name... haha
I'll PM you
I figured. Sarcasm. :P
I don't have a star so I don't get PMs.
The * was Phil's strategy to make Duncan, Pop and the Spurs nervous. It worked well in 01 and 02, but Pop figured Phil out in 03, Duncan was also in his prime. From there on, Phil has success against Pop in 04 and 08, however those Lakers teams had more talent that the Spurs teams.
Pop is a genius, but Phil is the best ever.
On this site
I guess the * might at least be an argument if the playoffs were tightly contested and it was possible that the shortened season provided some factor that somehow was a positive for the Spurs, just enough to get them over the hump.
But... dudes... the Spurs lost TWO GAMES in the ENTIRE PLAYOFFS. They steamrolled the league.
QED. The asterisk is dead. The Spurs were just better that year.
Phil Jackson initially coined the phrase "there should be an asterisk placed by the 1999 Championship" while making his case that he believed a Jordan-led Bulls team could have again reached the NBA Finals if only the Bull's owner had settled with Jordan (contract extension negotiations) and not forced his exit from the league... That phrase was not necessarily meant to belittle the Spurs' organization at all...
Only later, and coincidently so, did Jackson himself end up with the team that would become our archrival for the majority of the next decade (the hated Los Angeles Lakers)... It was at that point that he propagated the phrase as a 'troll' tactic to get under Spursfandom's collective skin...
