    Wrong.

According to Synergy, Spurs are 34-0 when leading after the 4th quarter.

I had hoped to see some commentary and pontification as to why the Spurs are 27-2 while leading going into the 4th quarter.

I had hoped to see some commentary and pontification as to why the Spurs are 27-2 while leading going into the 4th quarter.

Top 5 guesses, they can all be true, some may be true, or none may be true:

    1. I haven't done the research, but I'd guess the Spurs play their best FG% defense in the fourth quarter. They sometimes have a lazy quarter or half, but dial it up a notch in the fourth when they have to, even in losses.

    2. Also, gotta admit Parker's been beasting in the 4th quarters. That helps too.

    3. Pop plays his stars less minutes than most teams, so theoretically you'd think Tim and Tony would have more juice in the 4th than their counterparts.

    4. Benches traditionally play more minutes in the 2nd and 4th quarters, usually the first 4-6 minutes of the period. The Spurs bench has a huge edge on their opposition most nights, so a slim lead after 3 can extend.

    5. Just random dumb luck that doesn't mean anything. (Answer Pop would most likely give.)

    Thats quite a stat!

So I guess this team just needs to focus on being in the lead after the 4th. If they can consistently do that going forward they'll probably keep winning games.

    Amazing stat ain't it?

Spurs are also 34-0 when [(FGM-3PM)*2+(3PM*3)+(FTM)] > [(FGM-3PM)*2+(3PM*3)+(FTM)] for the opposing team by the end of the game.

With the Spurs dominating this super secret advanced stat, I see a in our near future.

It's quite a wrong stat. Spurs are actually only 31-0 when leading after the 4th.

    According to this:

    7-11 when trailing at halftime.

5-11 when trailing after 3 quarters.

    Reason:

Tony has been playing like an MVP and has been closing teams out

It seems like the Spurs are more effective in the 3rd than in the past and if they can continue to come out and hold leads or catch teams before the 4th that is a good sign. The converse is that they are only something like 7-12 when trailing going into the 4th and some of them have been close going into the 4th. That seems odd as it seems like this resilient Spurs team has fought back a number of times this year?

    Great stat

I agree with roycrikside that the two biggest reasons are probably defense and the closing ability of Tony Parker this season.

    Points Allowed Per Quarter
    First Quarter: 24.0
    Second Quarter: 24.4
    Third Quarter: 23.6
    Fourth Quarter: 23.4

I guess if you have a sub par defensive team, you at least hope your best defensive quarter is the fourth quarter.

In fourth quarters this season, Parker is averaging 34.4 points per 48 minutes on 50.9% shooting. In the third and fourth quarters, Parker is also shooting 86.6% at the line ... which has to help keep leads and win close games.

Duncan also deserves quite a bit of the credit. His defense improves (in fourth quarters, he's averaging 15.2 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per 48 minutes), he knocks down his free throws (75% in the fourth) and seems to play with much more power on the offensive end.

And the nice thing is that once Ginobili is back at 100%, the Spurs should be even better in fourth quarters.

The Spurs probably can't keep up their 93% winning percentage when leading going into the fourth quarter but for this team to make a run in the playoffs, they're going to have to lean heavily on their fourth quarter execution. Truth be told, they probably don't have the horses to expect to be great defensively for 48 minutes. But if they can at least be elite for the final 12 minutes, that should allow them to make a run.

I'd say the 3rd quarter is more telling as stats for the 4th are somewhat skewed because of blowouts ( either way ).

Stats are misleading not taking into affect of Manu jax and Diaw being added.

The stats in a couple weeks post additions will be better...
