I bought a Crucial M4 256GB SSD for my mac mini at home and the difference in speed is huge... went from a little over a minute to 15-20 secs for booting, apps open crazy fast, the whole thing flies...

Went from 40MB/sec read/write to 270MB/s read and 200MB/s write...

And this machine is fairly old (early 2009) so it only has SATA II, while the SSD can do SATA III...

Just a heads up for those considering SSDs...

Yeah, SSD's are great for boot drives and for games. They're a waste for storage though. My SATA II model has given me no urge to upgrade to III.

I'm surprised yours don't have one already.

I paid $360 shipped... Actually, I had $200 in Amazon gift certificates, so I added the extra $160...

I'm running an Early 2009 mac mini... 2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 8Gb, Lion...

It's an old box and only does SATA II... I've seen these things on the newer SATA III boxes and they do twice as fast... (almost half a gig a sec)...

Definitely will get one in my future laptop. I bought my laptop in 2009 and I use less than 80GB of space. 128 GB SSD should be enough.

to add more info, i recently installed a hybrid HD/SSD (seagate momentus)... there is an improvement but it is barely noticeable. You are much better served with separate SSD and HD for now, though I think very soon hybrids will be the better option

what's the best ssd you can get in terms of storage capacity?
I think it's 1TB (OCZ Octane). But it's prohibitively expensive. You really don't want to use the SSD for large files that don't require speed access. You mostly want the OS, and some extra for apps/games you use all the time...

I could've probably gotten away with a 128GB SSD (I had a 160GB drive before and about 50GB unused), but I figured I'll have the extra room. My big files are all on a 3TB external USB drive (movies, old games, large docs, etc)...

My current laptop - the ultrabook i just bought - has a regular HDD but it also has one of those small SSDs for fast boots and restore. Boots up in about 10 seconds even with the old style hdd.

I put one of the Crucial M4 256GB on my work box (Ivy Bridge i5), and it's just amazing... 524 MB/s read, 260 MB/s writes... also using USB3 external drives now, and those are fast as too.

Yeah I do most of my work on my 1tb external (usb3) and its so damn fast. I have to work on both my desktop at home and my laptop so being able to have all the data on the external is a good thing.

I'm keeping an eye on full-speed USB3 pen drives... still a bit pricey, but I'll jump on them soon... it's just so much faster than USB2

My new portable desktop has a 128GB vertex4 that I got for $75 on Black Friday. Pretty awesome. System boots in 12 seconds.
