Tim doesn't care, why should we?
Rookie season he averaged 21.1ppg, 11.9rpg, 2.5bpg.
Then up until 2004 he posted as good or better statistical years cementing himselve has the GOAT PF.
2005-2007 he was the man still and considered to be the best in the NBA even though his stats were dropping due to decreased minutes and deferring to teammates but still led the team of the NBA.
2008 began, the championsips dried up and he did begin to slip and since then his minutes and stats have been dropping in years since..
2008- 19pts, 11reb, 2 blocks
2009- 19pts, 10reb, 1.7 blocks
2010- 18pts, 10reb, 1.5 blocks
then
2011- 13pts, 9reb, 1.9 blocks
2012- 15pts, 9reb, 1.5 blocks

His career stats are all below his rookie year averages, yes his rookie year averages.
Anyway the point in making is..
Would any of you care in any way if Tim plays on a few more years and his career points average goes below 20 and his career rebounding averages went below 11, maybe below 10? And hs blocks went under 2?
For me it would. It would be a shame as Tim effortlessly put in yearly averages between 21-25.5ppg and 11.9 and 12.9 rpg seasons like clockwork in his prime and could have had much better stats if he wasn't so selfless.
The way it's going Tim's career stats will dip below 20 and 11, possibly below 20 and 10 if he plays much longer.
And i think that would be a shame for his legacy years down the track. All his career averages are now worse then his rookie year stats, except asissts.
It is a testament how great Tim was from the beginning of his Rookie season but i will be pretty sad the day Tim's career scoring average goes below 20and his rebounding goes below 11 or even 10, and his FG% goes under 50 (currently 50.6) and his blocks go below 2. Will be a shame considering how friggen good he was, all to chase le number 5 which may not happen. Maybe he was actually to selfless in his prime when he was far and away the best player on the planet.

Nobody pays attention to the PPG average at the end of a career like Tim's.. He is not a player that never won a ring so he needs stats to get in the HOF. He is not Charles Barkley. Tim even at his best was never a selfish star who cared about stats.. He could have chucked up shots and averaged 30 PPG early in his career.. And as far as stats go Tim Duncan is just the fourth player in NBA history with 20,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 2,000 blocks and 2,500 assists.
History regards him as the best to ever play his position..
True dbreiden83080. I suppose if you look at career totals and not per game stats Tim Duncan will always be themother en man! :-) Thanks for bringing those numbers up, they are awesome.

MJ retired in 93 and everyone called him the best of all tme. Then he came back, won 3 more championships, 3 more scoring les, 3 more finals mvp's and 2 more mvp's cementing himself as the greatest of all time. No question about it,
Then MJ decided to come back yet again with the Wizards and ever since then people are talking like Magic or Bill or Kareem Or Wilt or Oscar could be the greatest of all time. How did MJ go from being the greatest of all time in 93, to the surefire greatest of all time in 98, now after 2 failed seasons in washington and ty management/ownership people dont call him the surefire number 1 of all time anymore.
So no, MJ didnt retire for good, he kept coming back and tarnished his legacy.
Shaq stuck around and turned into a fat tired old bag, a shadow of his former self.
So yes, some people do stick around to long.
MJ was the greatest, not that I like him or anything. Just because he hung around too long does not change that.
Duncan has never been a great scorer. There have been LOTS of better rebounders and shot blockers. His all around team play is his greatness, which stats will never measure.
The grace with which he plays is his legacy.
And it's their decision to make.
Timmy says he wants to play "until the wheels fall off". Much better for him too play a little too long than to regret that he left too soon.
Well Mel, I think the big difference between Tim and Jordan is that Tim has been aging gracefully. He still plays great defense, produces on offense, and has continued to be a good player even if he can't always dominate like he used to. Jordan, imo, didn't adjust enough during the Wizards comeback.
I'd feel the same way about Tim's decision even if all the things you said about him were not true. He's going to be a former athlete for a very, very long time. I have no issue with him hanging on for as long as it makes him happy to wear the uniform.
