It's about influenses at an early age. Those growing up in Texas/Tennessee/Mississippi/Louisiana were surrounded by all kinds of music and...influenses. So many talented performers from there.

My favorite post war bluesman the great Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins. I have his 1947 Aladdin recordings (actually tons of his stuff) which were his first.

Here was one of his big influenses...

Who out there isn't thinking the same thing I am? That being here we have a boy who was abandoned as a child, he never knew his mom. He grew up waiting for her to show up, but she never did. Now in his twisted mind he has this strange obsession with ..your mom..this and that.

Big Boy Crudup
John Lee Hooker
Jimmy Reed
Muddy Waters

....that brought that old prewar blues (their influense) to a white audience. They influenses guys like Elvis. Who influenses....

Hopkins and those mentioned were influensed by guys like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton, Son House...from the 20's and 30's.

The Rolling Stones huge fans of Elmore James who was influensed by Robert Johnson who was influensed.....

Getting back to Hopkins...

He went some years without recodring, then in 1959 blues historian Samuel Charters went looking for him, found him in Houston...

With a bottle for Lightnin' Charters recorded Hopkins in a Houston hotel room, those recordings....incredible! One of my prized possessions.
