Clearly this was a group of angry MSNBC viewers.
i read the story. Apparently Owen said something to a group of kids playing basketball and they went to go get some peeps who came back and beat Owen's half to death.
They weren't watching NBC and just decide to go beat on some whitey.
Clearly this was a group of angry MSNBC viewers.
It's probably not.
Wow, ya'll people saying this was about Trayvon and part of a race war are wildin' the out. Totally untrue. This is about the game of basketball, and how a racist cracker didn't want some boys playing basketball in the neighborood. He didn't want them getting good so they could go to college and make money for their families playing in the NBA.
Don't believe me? See here, he even cut one of the boys on the hand...

The point of this story is that if this was incident was a hate crime then it should get attention in the national media. I don't know the colors of the suspects and victims of this incident but if the victim was white and the suspects were black and if one of them said that it was justice for Trayvon then it might be a hate crime.
White people can victims of hate crimes. It would be racist if white people could not be victim of hate crimes. Then again, hate crimes are a joke because they usually trivialize the victim and say that an emotion is a crime. If a person kills someone and it's not self defense, then it's murder. Feelings, emotions, and thoughts don't matter. Why does it matter if the person felt hatred? It's still murder and illegal.
Agreed. I wish there was some way to up the sentencing when the suspect lies though...
That said, being beaten by a mob would be a really frightening way to go imo. The phrase "justice for Trayvon" sounds slightly out of context to me though. Maybe the person who said that was responding to something Owens said? It may not necessarily be a hate crime but there should definitely be jail time involved for everyone who participated.
As much as I applaud your stance I can't fully object to hate laws though because I think they're appropriate for certain groups. Maybe the application just needs to be defined a bit better.
Oh come off it. Does the term "football hooligans" ring a bell with you?![]()
Even if this had nothing to do with Trayvon...
What would the media reaction be if the white and black of the people involved were reversed? What if it was a large group of white people beating a black man?

Why do you care so much about race and the media? Wrong is wrong no matter who's committing the crime. The fact that you can discuss this situation on a message board is proof that someone somewhere did some reporting. Not every story reaches national level. That's not necessarily a conspiracy so much as it is "the breaks".
Depending on where you go, there's a lot of white on black/black on white violence that goes without any mentions. The US is a big country and I'm sure you can dig up all kinds of terrible crimes committed by someone belonging to any demographic you choose on a daily basis. Facts are that most people aren't criminals and are simply trying to get through life the best they can. Using this is an opportunity to take digs at the media and demonize black people as a whole is exactly the kind of one-dimensional thinking that's effectively preventing America from moving forward.
Let's just keep this man in our prayers and hope that the police find and charge whoever did this. It looks like they have some solid leads to work with.

I'm just sick and tired of the way the media does things. I'm pissed because you're right in that wrong is wrong. The media shouldn't pick favorites, especially based on race. They just ad fuel to a fire we all want to see extinguished.
Wouldn't it be nice to live in a colorblind society?
It's not being treated as a hate crime.
It's your straw, what do you think the media reaction would be?
See: Rhetorical Question.
White guy gets beat up by a bunch of blake people and all we care about is whether the media reports the story.
I get the outrage due to the way the Martin story was presented by some of the media, but seriously, its pretty said when the news becomes if, when and how the news is reported.
It's not a rhetorical question
Hate crime, tbh.
I hear you WC. I really do. From the outside looking in, I find the US media very manipulative when it comes to areas I know something about like Public Policy or Economics. It honestly does not give me a good feeling when I see the way some people will swallow everything they hear from these stations.
The reason why they add fuel to the fire, imo, is partially a reflection of society today. It looks like they're inflaming the emotions and keeping people's attention that way. Not a lot of viewers want to hear substantive discussion on the ins and outs of the government's latest budget proposal for example so they'll operate through emotional appeals. They have to make their money somehow after all.
A colorblind society would be good but I think we're still a few generations away from that tbh. Prejudice and destructive tendencies only fade with time and increased exposure. We're getting there though.
WC are you this frustrated with the media when everytime a child is missing it's a WHITE FEMALE they show?!!!
no matter how much they about the fairness doctrine, conservatives want their own version of it when it comes to reporting race-related issues (esp. crime)
Sure, but you don't trust people that are black and you justify that view because of 'statistics.' I think any newscast that doesn't paint black men as felons would be unfair in WC world.
I don't care for any of the bias we see.
Agreed. That being said, it's worser when a white girl missing.
