NBA Commish David Stern holding playoff conference; makes introductory note about # of small markets in post season; level playing field

Says Metta suspension of 7 games did have to do with player's past

Stern says a teams schedule to end season will have bearing on Saturday/Sunday playoff opener, but so will building availability.

Stern says there will be "back to backs" in the 2nd round because of scheduling quirks.

    Expected yet still sucks.

I'm sure the Spurs will magically get a Saturday start.

So, that means, for practically first time ever, Spurs will actually get to start on a Sunday for a change??

Spurs staying over in San Francisco on Thurs. Won't return to SA until mid-day Fri. If Game 1 is Sat, there will be no practice beforehand.

Stern says there will be "possible" back to backs in round 2, because of scheduling quirks. Left out the word "possible" in last tweet

b2bs in the playoffs are bull . Thank god we have the best depth in the league but it really hurts Manu/Timmy.

While I initially thought that sucked (because of the age of Tim and Manu), I wonder actually if this could play to our advantage with our present run away depth.

Less deep teams might be sucking wind on the second game, while we might be able to put fresh bodies in....

    No doubt.

Really though, the Spurs need a Sunday start. They will probably be the last team playing on Thursday night. Add in Neal's injury and the other probable fluke injury that will happen in the next two games ... and I'm hoping for something like Sunday, Wednesday.

as a Spurs fan, i'm *hoping* for a Saturday start... i'm ready to see them play!

i don't think Pop will play the Big 3 Thursday, anyways.... so they'll be all rested.

but a Sunday game would be fine with me, knowing that extra day of rest will be useful.

B2B is bull . ing greedy NBA. Bad enough 66 games was squeezed into 4 months. Should have reduced the season to 50 games and have a normal playoffs.

Literally all but two games on Thursday start at 8 p.m. EDT -- only LAL/SAC and SA/GST start at 10:30 EDT. The Lakers are playing at home this weekend, so the late start is pretty much meaningless to them.

For what it's worth, only one Eastern Conference playoff team is playing a Thursday away game against a Western Conference opponent -- Orlando, which is playing in Memphis.

Reading between the lines a bit, Stern's comment about scheduling could only really apply in a couple of situations:

    1. the Clippers play tonight in New York and might play this weekend in LA; it would make some sense that the league might push the Clippers to Sunday to account for the cross-country trip and have the Lakers play Saturday (though that would be highly unusual) -- I don't think that's what he's talking about because the Mavericks play in Atlanta on Thursday and will likely have to play in LA this weekend, so making them travel to play on Saturday at LA might be considered unfair (particularly by someone like Cuban).

    2. the Spurs' situation.

For ease of reference, here's where the playoff teams close -- all games on Thursday unless otherwise noted:

    EAST
    Chicago v. Cleveland
    Miami at Washington
    Indiana v. Chicago (Wednesday)
    Boston v. Milwaukee
    Atlanta v. Dallas
    Orlando at Memphis
    New York at Charlotte
    Philadelphia at Detroit

    WEST
    San Antonio at Golden State
    Oklahoma City v. Denver (Wednesday)
    LA Lakers at Sacramento
LA Clippers at New York (Wednesday)
    Memphis v. Orlando
    Denver at Minnesota
    Dallas at Atlanta
    Utah v. Portland

Guess it does not matter since Utah plays on Thursday too. I guess Sat at 5:30 will be our game.

I hope a Saturday start or at least a Memphis / Clippers saturday starts

The big 3 will likely not play Thursday and the sooner both series starts, the more chance we have to avoid back to back in 2nd round

Spurs earned Saturday off with # 1 seed and killer schedule to close the season. I'd be surprised if they play on Saturday.

I doubt the NBA will ever let the top playoff seeds pick their opponents, but why not let them pick the schedule? I know building conflicts could exist, but each team could submit a ranked list of preferred dates/times, with better records getting priority. This would give the Spurs a reason to try and pass the Bulls, for example.
