SAN DIEGO, May 1 (UPI) -- A University of California student picked up in a drug raid was left forgotten in a holding cell for five days, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says.
The DEA says it is investigating what happened, whether the young man had food and water during the period of incarceration and access to a toilet, and how he obtained methamphetamine while in a lockup, the U-T San Diego reported. He was taken to a hospital and has apparently recovered.
The man was reported missing Friday by his roommate at UC San Diego. At that time, he had been in the hospital for two days.
The DEA seized 18,000 ecstasy pills, marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms, guns and ammunition in a raid April 21. Nine people were arrested.
Amy Roderick, a DEA spokeswoman, said the suspects were interviewed at a field office, where they were photographed and fingerprinted but not stripped or subjected to body cavity searches. She said one was released, seven were transferred to the San Diego County jail and the ninth was "accidentally left in one of the cells."
The young man has not been charged with anything. He reportedly told investigators he had gone to the house that was raided "to get high."

Chong, however, was left handcuffed in a 5 ft. by 10 ft. holding cell.

Chong said he screamed and kicked the door, but to no avail. Eventually, he began hallucinating and drank his own urine in hopes of staying hydrated. After days without any human contact, he tried to kill himself by breaking his glasses with his teeth, and using the glass to cut himself.

Surprisingly, Chong allegedly found a bag of methamphetamine in the holding cell, which he used to stay awake.

He goes to UC San Diego. "
" In addition, the University of California, San Diego is currently ranked 14th in the world and 12th nationally by the Academic Ranking of World Universities."

I read that the hospital said he was 8 hours away from death.

More like teaches all of us about the dangers of trusting authority

I haven't read the whole story and it sounds kinda hokey at first glance.

I can't see how an inmate can be missed for that long because there are procedures in place which are mandated by the state and by the federal government that inmates are to be counted at certain times.

These formal counts happen many times a day and if someone relieves you and you took over 25 inmates the next officer has to count 25 inmates or he won't relieve you.Period. No exceptions.

If this story checks out and I don't believe it is possible but if it checks out then he should get paid pretty well.

I'd bet my last dollar that this guy is either not being truthful or the drugs distorted his perception.

The Drug Enforcement Administration has issued an apology to Chong.
DEA San Diego Acting Special Agent-In-Charge William R. Sherman said in a statement Wednesday that he was troubled by the treatment of Chong and extended his "deepest apologies" to him. He has ordered an extensive review of his office's policies and procedures.
    Yeah, dude just hallucinated it.

why would he feel the need to use meth to stay awake?

at this point if i were him i'd say i used the meth to get high because I WAS LOCKED IN A CELL ALONE FOR 4.5 DAYS
He was drinking his own piss out of his hand.

He probably checked, licked & ate everything in there. I think he said he took the powder hoping he would die

Just because he was issued an apology doesn't mean the whole story is factual.
The DEA can issue an apology anytime. It doesn't equal an admission of guilt.
Like I said-if it checks out he should be paid well. It is just hard to believe.

Well, I have been upfront with where I work.

So, this story has already been investigated and reviewed and confirmed?
I thought that all the facts had to be confirmed before a judgement took place. Why is this always such a problem here?

If it is factual I already agreed the guy should be paid.

So far, the facts of the case are not in dispute: College student Daniel Chong was picked up by federal agents during a raid on a party in the San Diego area where there were illegal drugs, and after questioning he was left locked up in a holding cell with no water, food or access to a toilet for nearly five days.
