    According to Basketball Prospectus, Chicago ranked 17th most and San Antonio was 2 slots lower at 19th most games lost to injury. Kevin Pelton actually did the study based on the last 3 years, but for 2011-12, the Bulls and Spurs were only 2 slots apart and nowhere near the number of games lost to injury that Monty Williams' Hornets (3rd most) and Larry Drew's Hawks (5th most) had to deal with.

    Weak argument by Ms. Hill since her main premise is based on games lost due to injury. She might have had one of her questions batted-down by Pop in a presser one time...or something. Feelings hurt, perhaps. It happens.

    Popovich "just doing his job"? Please. Nobody managed player minutes like Pop did this year and his team still finished tied for the most wins. You know that ain't right, Ms Hill.

    So would Rose have an intact ACL with Pop coaching?
    Everyone knew D. Rose wasn't right this year. They really should have brought him back more gradually.

    The one place the Bulls have depth is at point guard. They could easily have found minutes for someone else at the end of that game.

    I have been the BIGGEST Pop hater here so IMO;

    Pop deserves this award. I am eating right now.

    Having said that, again IMO;

    The job is only halfway done and I am praying to have to eat more when and if the Spurs win the le. If the Spurs do not then this means absolutely nothing.

    You can't have it both ways. If you are good enough to be Coach of the year then you should win the le. If you fail to win the le with all the "embarrassment of riches" then you failed.
    If you win the le then you are absolutely deserving of any and all accolades.

    Please Pop, finish the job.
    I don't think it's so black and white as you portray it to be. It's tough to win an NBA le and it depends largely on luck. You can't say that losing in the finals or western conference finals is on the same level as being booted in the first round. Both cases are failing to win the le, but it's in different fashion. Especially considering how many tough teams there are to beat in a 7 game series, such as the Lakers, Thunder, and Heat. If a western conference team wins it this year, they will have had a very tough road to the le.

    I think it's different for coaches of different teams though. If you fail to win the le with a prime LeBron, Wade, and Bosh, then yes you failed.

    I'm sorry, but did Manu Ginobili's broken hand four games into the season not make it into the ESPN historical fact archive? This person is en led to her opinion, but are you really trying to tell me that Pop didn't deserve this? Really? He took a team that appeared to be on the brink of collapse after last season's playoff shocker, in which Duncan and Ginobili struggled with injuries, Parker struggled, and the Grizzlies destroyed the Spurs at their weakest point, and he led them to FIFTY WINS OUT OF A POSSIBLE SIXTY SIX. A coach is more than someone who oversees a team that plays without star point guards. A coach is someone who understands his team and makes the adjustments to get the best out them as a unit. Pop designed a system where Parker became the focal point of an offense that for the better part of a decade was run through Tim Duncan, brought in a supporting cast unlike any in the NBA, and has successfully incorporated sop re Danny Green into an electric scoring threat and defensive strength, as well as Kawhi Leonard - a ROOKIE who STARTS for one of the deepest and most talented clubs in the league and hasn't missed a beat. Not to mention the FO brought in Boris Diaw, Patty Mills, and Stephen Jackson and all 3 have become integral parts of the Spurs offense without the slightest signs of difficulty. He managed minutes to keep his players healthy and fresh, and developed a rotation that has his team functioning as EASILY the most efficient offense in the league that still knows how to play defense when the time is right. He changed the foundation of the Spurs' 4 championship teams from defensive half court minded to high octane transition offense minded and the Spurs have never looked better.

    The Bulls played through a massive injury. So did the Spurs. The Bulls won 50 games in a 66 game season. So did the Spurs. Here's the difference: Thibs' Bulls are a team assembled a few seasons ago to do what the Spurs and Lakers have been doing the last decade. The Spurs are a team that should have died at least 3 year ago and yet here we are, for the 15th season in a row, talking about San Antonio making noise in the playoffs. Thibs is a great coach, and deserved that award last year - when he did exactly what Pop did this year. "Absolutely did not deserve"? Ms. Hill, I'm sorry, but that's a slap in the face to the outstanding job Pop and the entire Spurs organization did this year. If the Bulls end up collapsing (like they're currently on the brink of doing), and the Spurs go on to make a deep run in the playoffs, your ENTIRE argument becomes invalid.

    Embarrassment of riches is exactly what most people would have called a starting lineup that included D-leaguer Danny Green, a waived Boris Diaw and an unknown rookie named Cow-eye. Yeah right.

    So then Thibbs didn't deserve it last year. He simply did his job, and with an MVP playing all season, he should have the best record in the league.

    Besides, it's a man's world, . You just live in it.

    She says Pop is the best coach in the NBA then says, he doesn't deserve COY honors. Isn't the COY supposed to be for the best coach, whether or not he "does his job?" Isn't that a double standard?

    So would Rose have an intact ACL with Pop coaching?
    Impossible to say, but if I had to put money on it I would bet he would have had a lesser chance to tear the ACL under Pop. I am however a lot more confident that his condition would have been better managed by the Spurs team (from conditioning to potential rehab).

    As for the original post.

    I understand the point she is trying to make, but the facts she uses actually speak to the opposite of her thesis. The "embarassement of riches" is probably the worst while the games missed by Rose is just sloppy journalist work. What is funny is that I thought this year Pop actually was extraordinary - which for a coach that is already pretty good when "he just does he job" is quite an amazing achievement.

    Bad column either out of lazyness or to create traffic on her page.

    to say winning COY you should back that up by winning the championship in the same year is foolish

    anything is possible in the playoffs, while the COY is awarded base on how a coach does in the regular season then what equates in the playoffs......

    most of the awards handed out are base on regular season play, seriously they should change it and either have it base on playoffs as well or have seperate awards for RS AND PO.....

    I didn't watch the video because she is just awful, but I don't think I've ever read comments on the ESPN boards that were so one-sided. I don't know if the people agree that Pop should be COY or the Jamele Hill hate is that strong. Either way, Jamele Hill and Israel Gutierrez.
    Can't believe that POS had the Spurs beating the Jazz in 7 games.

    Overall I have to say Pop has done a masterful job this year and fully deserves the award. He may not have made the moves he needed to make in timely fashion, but in the end they got done and he got his veterans to the playoffs healthy and has kept them healthy (so far, knock on wood). Thibs can't claim the same. And even if Rose was still healthy, I'd say she's still full of something (Amare Stoudemire's ?).

    She's just another two-bit bitter ESPN writer who loves NY and hates small market teams like the spurs and also the fact that she doesn't have the power to hand them a trophy every year.
