I am just suprised any sportsreporter acutally was able to articulate this so succinctly. Like he has already thought about this for a very long time.

"The Spurs aren’t remotely boring. They’re poorly marketed by a commissioner and a league that overdosed on Michael Jordan and the celebration of individual over team."

After MJ retired, do you remember all the players they kept trying to hype as "The Next Michael Jordan"? That's all they cared about, was finding some individual to be bigger than the game. And besides the fact that it was laughable, it was probably the worst thing that could have happened to guys like Vince Carter and Carmelo Anthony.

When this team finally has to re-build, I wonder who they're gonna get to be "The Next San Antonio Spurs"? The answer is - no one. And they'll be happy. Because it's a lot easier to market VinSanity and "Melo", when there isn't some pain in the ass team beating the crap out of them every year by paying attention to fundamentals.

Damn, that was an amazing article. Great, great read. I especially loved the part about the commissioner doing a poor job of marketing a great TEAM, not individuals...but a true TEAM.

San Antonio-Miami would represent team vs. stars, diligence and patience vs. instant gratification, humility vs. hype, international basketball culture vs. American basketball culture.

    This.

Tim Duncan (Virgin Islands), Tony Parker (France) and Manu Ginobili (Argentina), the San Antonio-drafted foundation of the Spurs team, did not grow up a part of traditional American basketball culture.

Add Splitter and Diaw. And even Bonner Neal Green.

    And you have This.

The Spurs and their multiple championships on the backs of Duncan, Parker, Ginobili and coach Gregg Popovich are a repudiation of American, AAU basketball culture. James, Wade and Bosh are the ultimate manifestation of American, AAU basketball culture.

    Perfect.

    I dunno.

Lebrun involves his teammates, plays d and rebounds, and is even criticized for over passing in closing minutes.

And in Duncan's prime, we ran a lot of isos.
