This is starting to remind me of Danny Boyle's apocalyptic film "28 Days Later" and Garth Ennis' end of days comic "Crossed. Characters in both stories basically say that you heard stories like this right before the end began, but they were sporadic and / or across the country that you thought it was an isolated incident and nothing of it. Then it started getting closer and people starting catching it on video, but again, the public was skeptical because of all the ways you can manipulate videos these days a la youtube.
