I agree. But seeing as quality big men don't grow on trees I am surprised the Spurs didn't work to develop Splitter. When he was at his best prior to his injury he was pretty darn good. He was blocking shots and you could run offense out of him on the block. Pop reduced him to a pick and roll player with Manu because he didn't like Splitter making him look like an idiot for not playing him last year.

When Splitter passed out of the keyway, he usually had 1 guy guarding him and 2 others collapsing on him.
Go figure. Many here saying he sucks but he still drew a lot of attention from the opposition and managed to make that pass out. Not many bigs have that ability.
Out of all the reserves he had the shortest leash. IN the play-offs it even got shorter. Sure, Pop gave him dressing down but i see it as a positive. If Pop doesn't think you can learn, he wont bother screaming at you. The fact that he was initially looking to put Splitter out there in the melting pot of WC finals, shows he thinks Splitter has the ability. It more about making it happen on the court.
The guy needs an increase in mins on a consitent basis in order to develop his NBA game and chemsitry with his teammates. It's an adjustment period the spurs have to allow if they want to see Splitter's true value.
To be honest Pop should have been yelling at himself cause he ed up with his subs and calling out a player like that was sad.
Splitter turned into a big man version of Danny Green this series. The only thing more ridiculous than those who thought he would have made a difference last year are those who thought more minutes this year would have been a playoff positive for us. Some players just come up small in the playoffs.
They probably offered a bounty on the first one to foul him. He kept frustrating them by dropping perfect passes.
After watching all the stupid, useless, lacking in skill bigs this playoffs like Denver's, LAC's Jordan, don't know what Pop wants from Splitter. I'm happy with him - at least he's got smarts, some skill and tries hard. He's not the toughest guy but hey, even the best centers like Howard and Bynum have their issues.
I wouldn't blame him if he left SAS after Pop's poor development/benching of him for the likes of trash like choker Bonner and undersized Blair. Don't know what some of you posters want - wake up and take a good look at the lack of quality big men out there and be happy that there's someone to turn to when matched up against LAL and MEM.
Pop went way overboard yelling at Splitter so for one mistake - lots of the players didn't play well including Duncan who hesitated on so many shots.
Better help defense? Rebounds? Shot blocking? A jump shot? Post moves?
A least one or two of those?

If you call out Splitter then call out Bonner, Green, Neal, Tony, Pop, Diaw, cause all of them left their nuts in San Antonio for Game SIX>..............
If you go by Pop reactions in game 6, the timing of them - the only aspect that mattered to coach was Splitter's help defense.
Now go see how much Diaw, Bonner and Blair offered that whole series. Splitter was the guy to be made an example of with a lot shorter leash.
He sucks. I played against him in high school here at Vancouver. He was a terrible rebounder for senior and for his size in college. He has small hands and doesn't really have too many post moves that he could use when he has his back to the basket. He's like another Splitter in the making.
Splitter Doesn't Suck. He's also not the full and complete answer to the spurs big problem. He's a fairly fast center, but he doesn't have the speed to guard many power forwards, some but not all. He is also not explosively athletic. For some reason he also seems to be vulnerable to getting bodied up by bigger players. For the twin towers Ideal to work a few things have to happen. At least one of those players has to be able to reliably hit a 12 to 15 foot jumper and its better to 18. The other one has to be able to reliably post up against the other teams center.
Splitter's jumpshot isn't there and low post work leaves a bit to be deisred. He's working on them and needs to add 15 lbs of muscle which will probably slow him a bit. Right now he's being groomed to be Duncans replacement at center in 2 years for a 5 to 7 year window. He's expected to be at about the level Tim is at now for that time, which would be quality starter and borderline all star. An athletic power-forward is still needed.
Blair isn't apparently the dedicated hardworking smart guy the spurs thought when they drafted him. He's got a place in the NBA the place just isn't with the spurs at the moment he will be kept until Diaw is resigned as insurance then shopped and shopped hard.
Diaw honestly isn't made to be the starter for a contending team at power forward especially at this time. He's more than skilled enough, but he doesn't really have the mindset for it. He's a a great guy to have as your third big though as he can chameleon as an inside guy, and as a stretch 4. He's got good handles for a back to the basket game and can pass out of a double team. He even sets good screens. He's not exactly a defensive stalwart though he's competent, and he's not the worlds greatest rebounder due to being a bit undersized.
This brings back what the spurs really need. An athletic big man, with legit size and strength, raw as can be is ok right now as if he's in with Duncan he's not expected to do allot on offense just block out, play hard defense and rebound. He gets put backs and dump offs when wide open off of a rotation due to drives off of a pick and role. He's essentially what Blair should have been if he developed like people hoped he would and was 2 to 4 inches taller. With Boris in this acquisition slids over to center and is expected to rebound play defense and get dunks from interior passes, drives and put backs, or Splitter goes in and continues to develop at center provided Slitter can get the 15' jumper down over the summer.
Is there any other report saying that Pop looooves Splitter?

Splitter's agent Marcelo Maffia says it's all a misunderstanding. Splitter couldn't hear Pop's instructions because of all the noise in the arena.
They had a meeting the next morning, Pop thanked everybody, said he was proud of the team and said "I love you" to Tiago many times.

Panic mode? Calling it "Panic mode", is over exaggerating it imo. If a player is underperforming, especially in the playoffs, do you try to ride it out, hoping the player comes around, or do you bench said player, hoping that his replacement can provide a spark? In the playoffs, you don't have alot of time, hoping a role player performs at a high level. Well Green was in the 2 home wins & he still played him, if he was going to bench him he should have done it sooner & yes it was panic mode by starting Manu.
The smart move would have been to bench Green in game 4 & start Jax.
