Our team just had too many young pieces to rely on. This thunder squad has been pushing in the playoffs with a good run starting two years ago. Plus last year they got to the WCF, their experience was building game by the game.

We had too many young pieces that Pop did or could not rely on. With this unreliance came the consequence of proper adjustments being unable to be made. Come to think of it, when was the last time Pop made an adjustment? I think it was choosing to start Tiago against the Lakers, other than that he chose to fold if it got tough and we had some great shooting most of the time. Unfortunately the Spurs were never in need of making adjustments and when we finally did in game four it was still a heartbreaker loss.

Our young guys need more experience in the same way the thunder did. Another big to make them pay in some way and relieve pressure off Tim should be a priority.
Another big? Pop could have done more to develop Splitter rather than wasting minutes on Blair and Bonner. Splitter was playing his best before he got injured then after that Pop started messing with his minutes. As a result Splitter never approached his best level of play again.

great post. This is what the regular season is for. Not saying it replicates play-off experience which OKC had but youngsters gotta learn the hard way. That means being able to make mistakes. When they were winning and POP felt he didn't mind losing a game or two would of been a good time to start.

Everyone was screaming for it during the season. I gave up on it when it became clear Pop only saw Tiago as a back-up for Tim.

I agree brother (therealtruth), Pop could have done a lot more to develop Splitter. He didn't though but if both of them are here next year that should change. Especially if Blair or Bonner is gone. If either or both is gone (which given their playing time in the series and playoffs, I believe is a reasonable assumption) than we will want another big to take their place.

At this point Pop may see that Bonners streaks with threes is only a regular season occurrence. Blair is not going to grow a few inches or gain his ACLs all of a sudden. Unless Blair shows some gain of a mid-range game or consistent success with post moves and a better job with boxing out the organization may not see much potential and growth in his future. I personally would hate to get rid of Blair, but he should show some major improvement in some area during this offseason. If that is not going to happen than pick up his replacement already and someone to play during injuries.

We need a reliable fourth dependable big, Bonner and Blair have not shown that kind of ability. Pop certainly doesn't trust them when the game is on the line. Pop made a comment earlier this season that Tiago is a Stalwart for the Spurs future. Pop will learn and give Splitter more minutes. I am not so sure that he will do the same with Bonner and Blair.

Leonard is a better player then Splitter, much better, get it?

Splitter failed to post up Fisher, he's garbo!
IF your point is that Leanard is better player than Splitter you wont get much of an arguement from me. They also play different posi and different roles for the Spurs. You get the point of this thread?

Read my post about learning the hard way. Kawai got to start, got the mins and play through mistakes. Yet he wasn't sure when to double in the WC finals.

Spurs in the second half of the season went away from Tiago posting up even on the mis-match and concentrated on P'n'R.

Now correct me if im wrong but i remember 2 occasions they went to Splitter on the mis-match with Fisher. First time Splitter got the charge which easily could of been a flop. Second time Splitter got fouled .They never went back to him in the post.

Yeah Pop did some things this season that could have been improved on. At the same time the teams record was so good that no changes were screaming to be made. I can't be mad at the guy, he helped take the Spurs where they got and I'm sure helped the front office determine what types of season trades to make which ultimately may make the team even more dangerous next year. At the same time our young guys learned from the three series and also learned how tough a series can be. Really the only thing worse than what occurred would have been up 3-0 and then lose the next four games. Our guys learned, Pop learned the limits of his trust with the current roster.

I'm sure Tony would love another shot at it. This was basically his first year in trying to lead this team. Danny Green will not shrink in another moment like this, he didn't in college and he had some great games for us during the regular season. Next year he will be much more dangerous with fewer mistakes. If Tiago has any passion he too will want another chance to show Pop that he can be relied on, another year in the Spurs system may give him that. Diaw needs to realize that when he's wide open, there probably won't be a better shot he can create for a teammate when the paint is packed. If Gary Neal can improve his defense (I am not sure if his body limits him) damn I like our chances, this will only make the second unit more reliable and starters may get a shorter amount of rest.

    The future is bright.

Bull ! If the choice is bad free throws or bad defense, you take the free throws. At least the clock stops and Duncan catches a quick breather! Diaw can't play defense with four guards, he barely does well with Duncan!
I don't know what this crazy notion that Splitter is good defense. Splitter is not good defense. His defensive challenges is to lead with his head and try to take a charge. He has limited vertical leaping ability and is slow laterally. Guys take it to the basket all the time on Splitter and jump right over him.

In matter in fact Splitter brought so little to the table that he was a liability to see the floor with his bad free throw shooting. That is why Pop decided to leave him on the bench where he belonged. The pressure of the playoffs got to Splitter.

This is just so stupid. Splitter has been good for the last 5 years or so. Now you blame him when he doesn't even play?

I would give up all the regular season records to have a chance for a le. There's no prize for best record in the regular season. Pop's been the best regular season coach since we got Duncan but the les don't match up. He should have had at least 1 or 2 more during that span.

Are you denying that you don't defend Pop no matter what?

That is the reality. No matter what criticism anyone levies against Pop-you and mdumpster have to run in here and defend Pop.

This makes you a Popsucker. Not my calling you out on it---you doing the defending over and over. You cannot bear anyone saying things about Pop.

    What would you call it?

I hear ya. One can only hope that he too was able to learn from the experience and will make necessary adjustments to his own regular season coaching. I just noticed some important similarities if we can keep this core together:

2009-2010 Thunder out after first round
    2010-2011 Thunder out after WCF
    2011-2012 Thunder reach Finals

2010-2011 Spurs out after first round
    2011-2012 Spurs out after WCF
    2012-2013 Unwritten History

It's not like we can't beat the Thunder. We should continue to have a great shot next season. Role players are going to have to step-up and I think Tiago will need to become part of this teams iden y and a force in some part of his offensive game and defensive game.

I think you were making some posts about needing a mid-range option in our game. I agree, that should be a strong option when players are run off the 3 point line. I know the whole point of the offense is to keep the ball movement and look for the best possible pass but in rare situations like the the OKC series, a drive and mid-range jumper should be a strong option especially when the paint is packed. Creating some space and a shooting a mid-range jumper may help keep the defense honest.
