Outside of the Greek qualification over Russia, i don't see anything really surprising here.

Russia and Poland were suppossed to be the ones to qualify on Group A and I think that the WC runner-up not making it out of the group stage is a surprise, tbh.

I see your point but WC runner-up status doesn't mean much these days (cf. France at Euro 08). Plus, when you have a group made of Germany, Netherlands and Portugal; the early elimination of a big gun is not surprising, it's mathematically logical.
