Perhaps not, but you have to understand the alternative. Deron is unrestricted once he opts out, meaning he can go anywhere. He can tell the Nets, "hey, I'd like to go to the Lakers if you can make a deal, otherwise, I'll sign with a team who can give me a max contract like Dallas." If the alternative is watching him walk and they get nothing, Gasol sounds like a pretty good return.
Doesn't mean the Nets would take it anyway, but Deron being unrestricted and able to walk for nothing at least gives the Nets some incentive if in fact Deron would like to go to the Lakers.
